Applause as NYPD Officer Discharged From Hospital After Bronx Shooting

There were cheers and applause as an NYPD officer was discharged from the Lincoln Medical Center early on May 11 after he was shot while chasing a suspect in the Bronx late the night before.

Police said the officer, who was named as Dennis Vargas in local media, was shot in the arm while pursuing a suspect.

Rameek Smith, 25, was fatally shot during the encounter, according to The New York Times.

NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell described Smith as a “dangerous criminal who should not have been on the streets.”

He was admitted to St Barnabas Hospital in critical condition and later died of his injuries.

In a press briefing, Sewell thanked officers for their work, saying, “This is what we ask them to do, and they are on the streets every day and night risking their lives on behalf of New Yorkers.” Credit: NYPD via Storyful
