Apple changes face ID during coronavirus pandemic. Here’s an update for iPhone users

With face coverings becoming an increasingly common accessory during the coronavirus pandemic, Apple is making it easier to unlock your phone without having to take them off, CNBC reported.

The company released the iOS 13.5 update this week, and it includes Face ID software that allows iPhone users to access their phones while wearing a mask, according to Apple’s website.

“iOS 13.5 speeds up access to the passcode field on devices with Face ID when you are wearing a face mask and introduces the Exposure Notification API to support COVID-19 contact tracing apps from public health authorities,” Apple’s website said.

Before the update, a user would need to remove their face covering because the feature scanned your entire face in order to open your phone, CNN Business reported. The new feature also gives you the option to immediately enter your passcode instead of having to wait, according to CNN Business.

The update includes software created by Apple and Google that helps track and slow the spread of coronavirus, CNBC reported. The software will help governments create digital contact tracing and exposure notification apps by using bluetooth technology, according to CNBC and CNN.

IPhone users can get the update by going to Settings, General and then clicking “Software Update,” Apple said. Even if your iPhone doesn’t have facial recognition software, Apple encourages you to get the update, as it includes “bug fixes and other improvements,” according to the company’s website.
