Apple is making its debut in the video streaming wars -with a star-studded series tackling a controversial subject: the #Metoo movement.
"The Morning Show" starring Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon and Steve Carell goes behind the scenes of a fictional American news show.
Aniston-- in her first TV role since rising to fame on "Friends" 25 years ago-- plays Alex Levy, a veteran journalist...who learns her male co-anchor has been fired amid accusations of sexual harassment...
Her co-star Witherspoon says the topic is important to both of them.
ACTRESS AND EXECUTIVE PRODUCER REESE WITHERSPOON SAYING: "I think jumping into a cultural conversation is so rich. And particularly as television and movies help us synthesize the things we're seeing on TV, and give us a human perspective. It's a conversation that needs to be had by men and women both. So, we had a very gender balanced creative team that was really important to us."
Carell portrays the show's disgraced male lead anchor...his character is reminiscent of the real-life cases of powerful men in the news business, like Matt Lauer and Charlie Rose, who lost their jobs following misconduct allegations.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) ACTOR STEVE CARELL SAYING: "I didn't use them as templates, I mean I - so much of it was really in in the writing itself. And I tried to kind of stay away from doing a depiction of a person or trying to study how someone would act because I think this is, I mean who knows? This is all of behind closed doors thing anyway."
"The Morning Show" also explores issues of ageism and ethics in the news business. Witherspoon portrays a younger reporter navigating the world of TV journalism as the older Aniston is worrying about whether she will be dropped from her anchor job.
But in real life Aniston said she was quite happy behind the camera as well- serving as a co-executive producer for the series...
(SOUNDBITE) (English) ACTRESS AND EXECUTIVE PRODUCER JENNIFER ANISTON SAYING:"Well, I mean we've been doing this for so, so long. We have so much knowledge of how a a very well-run ship runs and so for us I think it's, extremely exciting to be a part of the creative process from the ground up."
The Morning Show will debut on November 1st- one of eight original shows viewers can watch on Apple's new subscription video service called Apple TV+
