Apple pies made for annual band and orchestra fundraiser
Music education is strong at Sturgis middle and high school with more than 200 students involved.
For many years, there has been a November pie sale. It's a popular among community members as a way to support the band and orchestra programs.
From 7 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, students, parents and volunteers made 1,200 pies, which they sold for $10. All were ordered ahead of time.
Apple pie the owasnly option this year, due to shortages, and even that was a scramble. Kim Haller, a volunteer, said they went to seven different Gordon Food Service stores to get enough frozen apples.
The shopping list included:
1,200 pie shells
1,425 pounds of apples
3.5 pounds cinnamon
200 pounds butter
556 pounds sugar
261 pounds of flour
