Feb. 16—An Apple Valley man who raped a 13-year-old girl he met at a Lakeville park was sentenced Wednesday to 10 years probation.

Brandon Glenn Corbett, 18, was sentenced via Zoom by Judge Jaime Cork in Dakota County District Court for one count of criminal sexual conduct in the third degree.

Corbett pleaded guilty to the charge Nov. 19.

The sentence was a stay of imposition, which means the court accepted and recorded that Corbett is guilty, but did not impose a prison sentence. If he successfully completes the requirements of the probation, his case will be discharged and the conviction will be deemed a misdemeanor, rather than a felony, under the law.

"I know you're sorry for what you did, but do you understand the harm that was caused to the victim and the things that she's going through now?" Cork asked, adding that she had some concerns about Corbett's motivation to follow through. "You are a young man, so you can overcome this. You just need to do the work."

No victim impact statement was read in court.

Corbett must serve 60 days in the Dakota County jail, pay a $50 fine, complete a chemical dependency evaluation, complete a psychiatric evaluation, complete a neuropsychological assessment, use no alcohol or non-prescription drugs, remain law abiding, submit to random drug testing and register as a predatory offender. He also must participate in a sex offender treatment program, have no contact with the victim, stay away from Antlers Park in Lakeville, have no contact with minor females without prior authorization from the probation officer, submit to polygraph testing and submit to searches of his home and computer. In addition, he must not use or possess sexually explicit or pornographic materials, must give a DNA sample and must not possess firearms.

According to the criminal complaint, police officers began the investigation June 13 with an account from a witness who saw photos of Corbett and the girl on SnapChat, a social media platform.

The witness told police that he saw Corbett grab the girl in a sexual manner and that she appeared to be surprised by the contact, the court records state. Officers were able to identify the girl through social media. She admitted to meeting Corbett at the park and then going to his house, but said she ignored his advances for sexual intercourse.

At his residence, he became forceful with her, insisting on having intercourse. She told police she was scared, so she did what he wanted, according to the complaint. The witness told police Corbett bragged about the incident to a friend through social media.

"I am thankful that I get a second chance," Corbett said. "I understand what I did was wrong."
