Appleton man leads police on chase in stolen vehicle, later crashes into tree, Dodge County Sheriff's Office says

A 36-year-old Appleton man is hospitalized and in custody after leading police on a chase and later crashing into a tree, the Dodge County Sheriff's Office said.

According to the sheriff's office, Beaver Dam police attempted to stop a stolen vehicle around 3:45 p.m. Wednesday. The sheriff's office was made aware of the vehicle from the Flock Camera System, which is a license plate recognition system.

A traffic pursuit was initiated after the vehicle sped on Highway 151 near County Road W, but officers lost sight of the vehicle after reaching a "high rate of speed," the sheriff's office said.

Shortly after the pursuit ended, the sheriff's office received a 911 call from a resident reporting a vehicle had struck a tree on Well Road near County Road G in the town of Lowell. The vehicle was the stolen vehicle that fled officers in Beaver Dam, authorities said.

The driver sustained serious injuries and was taken by Flight for Life to the Aurora Medical Center in Summit. He was arrested under suspicion of operating while intoxicated, drug related, and the sheriff's office said he had a warrant out for his arrest.

According to the sheriff's office, the vehicle was equipped with an electronic license plate flipper. The sheriff's office is conducting the crash investigation.
