Appliance recycling event planned for Swansea. Here's what to know.

SWANSEA — Swansea and Somerset residents will have a chance to offload unwanted appliances and other large trash items at an upcoming event.

A junk removal company will be on hand at Joseph Case Junior High School to accept items like car batteries, air conditioning units, tires, mattresses and microwaves, then dispose of them properly.

Originally slated to take place Saturday, Sept. 16, the town announced this week that it is being postponed due to the inclement weather expected this weekend. No new date has been set.

Sen. Michael Rodrigues is helping to promote the event, which is similar to one that took place in Westport earlier this summer. Senator Rodrigues’ office estimated that more than 250 cars came through in one day.

“It was a resounding success,” said Sean Fitzgerald, Director of Communications for Rodrigues. “The senator felt that other communities could benefit from another ecologically beneficial event.”

There is a $20 fee per car. Residents can get the fee waived by bringing a dehumidifier, dry or canned food or clothes to donate. Some larger items like mattresses, water heaters and mini fridges will carry an additional fee. Anyone who brings a dehumidifier will also receive a $30 rebate from National Grid.
