Appliance recycling event planned for Westport. Here's what to know.

WESTPORT — A recycling event planned for this weekend will allow residents to get rid of unwanted appliances and other big items that can’t go in the regular trash.

“This is a great chance to clean out your attic, your basement or, in my case, my garage,” state Sen. Michael Rodrigues said at a press conference announcing the event on Friday morning.

The event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 24, in the parking lot of the former Westport High School, 19 Main Road.

Green Team Junk Removal, a company based in Holliston, will then take the unwanted appliances and dispose of them properly. Fred Cullen, an employee of Green Team, said the recycling event will allow residents to get rid of clutter for a lower price than bringing it to many area town recycling centers or junk hauling companies.

Disposing of each item will cost:

  • Car batteries: $5

  • Air conditioners:$5 each

  • Microwaves: $8

  • Mini fridges: $8

  • TVs and computer monitors: $45

  • Mattresses and box springs: $45

  • Tires: $10

  • Styrofoam: $10/bag

Bulk collection of computer and gaming system parts will cost $20 per car.

Angel’s Anonymous and Citizens for Citizens, two local nonprofits, will also be there on Saturday collecting donations of items like dry and canned food, personal care items and diapers. Residents can avoid the $20 per car fee by bringing those items to donate or by bringing a dehumidifier or clean, usable clothes that will be donated to area charities.

A similar event held last year at Bristol Community College attracted more than 150 people.

“It was an overwhelming response. I expect it will be the same this year,” said Rep. Carole Fiola, who was also at the press conference. “Everyone has junk that they need to get rid of but they don’t know how.”
