The resignation of state Rep. Tim Butler, R-Springfield, is expected before the end of the year and the Republican Representative Committee for the 95th District is accepting applications for the vacancy.

Qualified candidates wishing to represent the district in the Illinois General Assembly have until Dec. 22 at 5 p.m., to file an application. The application must include a letter of interest and an up-to-date resume. It can be submitted at the Sangamon County Republican Central Committee headquarters, 1132 Sangamon Ave., or via email at sangamonrepublicans@scrcc.comcastbiz.net.

A committee composed of RCC chairs in Sangamon, Christian, and Macon counties will then vote on Butler's replacement. The appointee will serve the two-year term beginning Jan. 11, 2023.

Sangamon RCC Chair Dianne Barghouti Hardwick will hold the plurality of votes since the county had the majority of ballots cast to re-elect Butler in November — an uncontested general election victory for the Republican.

The replacement vote is set for 10:30 a.m. Jan. 5, 2023 at the Sangamon Republicans office. The meeting is open to the public.

Butler served in the state legislature for eight years and is leaving to serve with the Illinois Railroad Association.
