ELLWOOD CITY — Seniors graduating from Lincoln and Riverside high schools are eligible to apply for the Dom Viccari-McDonald’s of Ellwood City Scholarship.

The $1,000 annual scholarship is named to honor the man who worked tirelessly to improve Ellwood City for all residents, first as a five-term council member and three-term council president, and later as borough manager for seven and half years until his retirement in 2013.

Viccari continues his public service as 2nd Vice-President of the Ellwood City Area Historical Society and as a member of the Lawrence County Planning Commission.

“Dom Viccari dedicated himself to improving life for all of us,” said Paul Sweeney, who, along with his daughter Meghan, owns and operates several Golden Arch locations in western Pennsylvania. “His efforts with local government, recreation, environmental conservation and economic vitality have made Ellwood City a better place to live, work and raise families. We’re looking forward to receiving applications from local students who are committed to continuing Dom’s legacy of community service.”

Open to students planning to attend two or four-year vocational or academic schools, the Dom Viccari-McDonald’s of Ellwood City Scholarship Fund recognizes academic achievement, leadership ability and community service by local young people.

“I’m humbled that my community service is being recognized this way,” Viccari. “I hope this scholarship fund will improve our community by supporting the education of developing young leaders, and I thank Paul Sweeney and McDonald’s for their continued support of our community.”

Interested students are encouraged to apply by completing the application form and submitting short essays addressing these topics:

  • Explain how you would be inspired to improve your community.

  • Describe what philosophy of community service you would pass on to those who aspire to lead.

  • Being a leader requires compassion, empathy, energy, creativeness, responsibility, trust and other attributes. Describe the qualities you possess that make you worthy of receiving the Viccari - McDonald's Scholarship.
