How to apply for absentee ballots in Mobile: deadlines, requirements

MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. (WKRG) — The deadline for applying for absentee voting ballots is coming up, according to the Probate Court of Mobile County.

In a press release, officials with the Probate Court of Mobile County remind voters that the last day to apply in person for absentee ballots for the March 5, 2024, Alabama Primary election is Thursday, Feb. 29. Absentee ballot applications submitted by mail must be received by the Absentee Election Manager’s office on Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2024.

Any qualified voter may submit a request for an absentee ballot based on the following reasons:

  • They are out of the county or state on election day

  • They have a physical illness or infirmity which prevents them from attending the polls.

  • They have a shift that has at least 10 hours that coincide with the hours the polls are open

  • They are a student enrolled in a school outside of the county of residence

  • They are a member, spouse or dependent of a member of the United States Armed Forces, or is qualified according to the Federal Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act

  • They will be out of the county on election day responding to a state of emergency as declared by this state, any other state, or the federal government.

To pick up an application for absentee voting, visit the Absentee Election Manager’s office, located on the first floor of the Mobile County Government Center Annex (151 Government Street). Voters can also find absentee ballots online by visiting the Probate Court’s website or the Alabama Secretary of State’s website.

Completed ballots must be returned by the voter:

  • In-person: Return absentee ballots in person to the Absentee Election Manager at the Mobile County Government Annex no later than 5 p.m. on March 4, 2024

  • Mail: If mailed through the United States Postal, absentee ballots must be received by the Absentee Election Manager by noon on the day of the election.

Officials note that multiple ballots cannot be mailed together in the same envelope.
