The Apprentice has aired the shock firing of Simba Rwambiwa after the latest task went to the dogs. Literally.

In Thursday's episode (March 9), the BBC One reality competition brought back one of its all-time most popular tasks to challenge each team to develop and brand their own dog food.

The teams were responsible for every aspect of the manufacturing process, right down to having to taste the food they were ready to serve up to Lord Sugar's hounds.

Lord Sugar immediately started in with the dog puns in the boardroom, telling the teams that while "you can't teach an old dog new tricks", he was well prepared to judge their marketing and branding.

He started in on Team Affinity first – Lord Sugar and Tim Campbell dinged them for including the minimum quantity of meat in their Chef Barking food even though brand leaders include up to 60% meat.

When it came time for Team Apex to be evaluated, they devolved into in-fighting over aspects of the project falling apart right from the jump. It was no surprise that Affinity won the challenge while Apex would be called back to the boardroom.

Megan, Simba and Dani were all blaming one another as they returned to the boardroom for their evaluation, where Lord Sugar faulted Apex for trying to hide that they used insects in their food.

"Singing and dancing about it, I don't think it's appealing," Megan insisted.

However, Karren Brady pointed out that Megan had taken the wrong approach because the buyers wanted transparency over the ingredients.

Simba ultimately took the fall and was fired, leaving the final five to face some of Lord Sugar's top advisors returning for the interviews round.

The Apprentice airs every Thursday night on BBC One, with spin-off series You're Fired airing immediately afterwards on BBC Two.
