APSU Mondays: Research, renovations, military hall of fame, and plant sale

Here's the latest news from Austin Peay State University.

Strategic plan pays off with undergraduate research opportunities

Goals for the strategic plan unveiled last year including fostering meaningful opportunities and experiences, plus engage them beyond the classroom.

Sophomore Yuriy Holovchak, who is double majoring in engineering physics and computer science, is an example of the university’s efforts. Holovchak plans to pursue a Ph.D. in physics after he graduates and work with quantum technology firms, or even set up a quantum technology company.

Holovchak recently presented the research he did with Drs. Roman Golovchak and Andriy Kovalskiy — professors in the Department of Physics, Engineering and Astronomy — in Posters at the Capital in February. Their project was titled “Special Glasses for Integrated Photonic and Electronic Platforms.”

“The skills of operating modern lab equipment and creating proper setups to obtain required data are the ones I plan on mastering during my undergraduate years at Austin Peay,” Holovchak said.

College of Business to receive $9 million in renovations

The College of Business is set to undergo extensive renovations this summer as part of a $9 million investment secured through state and private funding in 2022. The project will update a significant portion of the facility, enhancing the campus experience for years to come.

“This project will be transformational for the College of Business — enabling us to enhance student engagement in the classroom and elevate student support outside of it,” said Dr. Mickey Hepner, dean of the College of Business.

Native Plant Sale begins third year

The city of Clarksville and the university are encouraging community members to support the environment through the Healthy Yards Program third annual Native Plant Sale from April 1-29.

“With the city of Clarksville’s Sustainability Board and the APSU Center of Excellence for Field Biology supporting the Healthy Yards campaign, I have grown many more plants for the sale this year,” Wes Powell, Austin Peay’s director of Landscape and Grounds, said. “There are nearly 1,500 native grasses, flowers, trees and shrubs available.”

Powell said the sale includes 63 unique species of plants, with 17 species newly added this year — each grown on campus. Anyone who purchases a native plant during the sale will be able to pick up their order from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. April 28 and 9 a.m.-noon April 29 from the campus parking lot at the corner of Eighth Street and Farris Street.
