APSU Mondays: Teacher fair, Legends Bank Lecture Hall and Thanksgiving parade

Here's the latest news from Austin Peay State University.

College Street logo installation to impact traffic

Contract workers are installing two thermoplastic logos on campus: one at the intersection of College Street and University Avenue, and another at the intersection of College Street and Eighth Street.

Motorists should expect temporary traffic pattern changes during the installation, which began Wednesday and is expected to take five to six business days with the potential for rain delays. The Clarksville Street Department will assist with traffic control throughout the project.

The contractor plans to work on one logo at a time, beginning with the intersection at College Street and University Avenue. During each installation, one traffic lane will be blocked in each direction, starting with the interior and turning lanes. Once that portion is installed, traffic will be routed to the interior lanes so that the outer sections can be completed. Motorists are encouraged to use a different route to get to campus during this process to lessen the amount of traffic near the workers.

These pathways allow teaching candidates to serve as the teacher of record in a local school while completing the requirements for a graduate-level degree or certificate. As teachers of record, they are paid as school district employees. The convenience and flexibility afforded through this pathway are major draws for career changers or classified employees at local schools seeking to earn licensure.

To qualify for Austin Peay’s job-embedded degree or certificate programs applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • 3.00 cumulative GPA

  • Major in the content area or earn a passing score on the Praxis II Content Exam

  • Intent to hire by a partnering school district

Legends Bank recently pledged a significant gift to the College of Business (COB) Dean’s Fund of Excellence to establish the Legends Bank Distinguished Professorship in Banking or Finance Endowment, making it the COB’s largest corporate investor to date.

To recognize their contribution, the university will name the Kimbrough Building’s lecture hall the Legends Bank Lecture Hall starting July 1.

“We are fortunate to have such a meaningful relationship with our friends at Legends Bank,” APSU Vice President for Alumni, Engagement and Philanthropy Kris Phillips said. “Their intentional giving to the College of Business and the University as a whole has increased our local visibility and our ability to prepare graduates who will become adaptable and hardworking professionals.”

The Legends Bank Distinguished Professorship was designed to enhance students' experience by enabling the College of Business to attain high-quality, teaching-oriented faculty. Selected professors will receive faculty development funds to be used for research improvements and equipment, creative teaching enhancements and to attend educational conferences and other professional development events. The professorship will be awarded for a term of three years, and awardees may receive it for multiple terms.

Cobb went through a highly competitive selection process for her spot in the parade. Band directors who performed at the Rose Bowl were given priority, and she also had to submit a form with background information about her career – but it wasn’t long before she heard back.

“Our music went out a couple of days ago, so I’m already starting to practice,” she said. “I have a musical family, so they’re understanding of a loud trumpet being played in the house at night. But honestly, I don’t play as much as I did in college, so it’s been nice to find time to get reacquainted with my instrument.”

Cobb plans to continue practicing until the trip, which is scheduled from Nov. 19-23 to allow for plenty of rehearsal time and sightseeing.
