Aqua to begin Patterson Street waterline replacement project on Monday

Aqua will be replacing 2,827 linear feet of watermain along Patterson Street in Marion beginning Monday.

“This project is part of our ongoing commitment to improve the Marion water distribution system,” said Aqua Ohio’s Area Manager Scott Ballenger. “We’re continually evaluating our system to assure quality service and reliability. This line is over 120 years old and has begun to show signs that it has reached the end of its useful service.”

Key elements of the project include:

  • Replacing cast iron pipe along Patterson Street between Patten and Quarry Streets with ductile iron pipe which is lighter, stronger and more corrosion resistant.

  • Increasing the diameter of the pipe between East George Street and Quarry Street from two-inches to six-inches to improve water flow, especially during high demand needs such as fire fighting.

  • Installing new service lines up to the customer-owned portion of the line for the 50 customers along the construction route as well as seven new fire hydrants to improve fire protection and 16 new valves to help isolate disruptions for future repairs or maintenance.

Crews will begin at the north end of Patterson and limit work to two-block sections of the street with traffic restricted. Access to residences will be maintained.

Work is expected to be complete by the end of the year. Final lawn restoration will be planned in the spring when soil temperatures are warm enough for grass seed to germinate.

Water service will be maintained throughout construction. However, customers receiving new service lines will experience short-term interruptions while services are connected to the new main near the end of the project. Those customers will be notified by Aqua in advance of the planned interruptions.

Dirt Dawg Excavating of Ashland was selected to perform the work and the budget for the project is $849,736. Ballenger said the company expects to spend more than $65 million across Aqua’s 40 Ohio systems in 2023, with approximately $8.5 million of that being invested in the Marion area.
