Aquagirls dunk Marshalltown, Hoover to stay unbeaten

Sep. 1—MARSHALLTOWN — Another dominating effort in the pool kept the Newton-Colfax-Mingo-Pella girls swim team undefeated on Tuesday.

The Aquagirls won every single event against Des Moines Hoover and knocked off the Huskies 83-10. Against host Marshalltown, NCMP went 1-2 in six events and downed the Bobcats 66-35.

"We looked pretty strong last night, and the coaching staff and I feel good about where we are right now," NCMP head coach Sarah Patterson said. "We will keep working hard and grinding on technique and the little things."

The Aquagirls went 1-2 in the 200-yard medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay. They were 1-3 against Marshalltown in the 400 freestyle relay and swept Hoover in the event.

In the 200 medley relay, the team of Alex Riney, Harper Barton, Maylei Ruggles and Peyton Ray won the race in 2 minutes, 2.7 seconds. The foursome of Tori White, Brooke Linahon, Izzy Lane and Paige Benson finished second in 2:04.56.

Barton, Benson, Linahon and Lillie Ray teamed up to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:50.57. The team of Lane, Hailey Dickerson, Avery Meyer and Addison Van Maanen took second in 1:56.91.

The team of White, Evelyn Munk, Benson and Riney took second against Hoover and third against the Bobcats with a time of 4:10.12.

"We are a pretty deep team so we are challenging each other — which is good," Patterson said.

The Ray sisters each won a pair of individual events, too.

Lillie Ray won the 100 and 200 freestyle and Peyton Ray was victorious in the 200 individual medley and claimed a win against Hoover in the 500 freestyle.

In the 100, Lillie Ray finished with a winning time of 57.65 seconds and Barton (1:00.67) was third against Marshalltown and second in the dual with Hoover.

Lillie Ray (2:11.10) and Munk (2:18.52) were 1-2 in the 200 freestyle.

In the 200 IM, Peyton Ray (2:27.14) hit the wall first and Linahon (2:33.46) was the runner-up.

Peyton Ray was first against Hoover and second in the dual with Marshalltown in the 500 freestyle. Her time was clocked in 5:58.82.

"Peyton Ray dropped a great 200 IM time and swam a 500 in under 6:00 — which is the goal I set for her," Patterson said. "Freshman Tori White swam a blistering IM time — she is very versatile."

Anna DeVries (6:23.72) was second in the 500 freestyle against Hoover and fourth against Marshalltown.

The Aquagirls were 1-2 in both the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke.

Riney won the 100 backstroke in 1:07.57 and Ruggles was the runner-up in 1:08.51.

"Alex Riney is really putting the pieces together and looked great winning the 100 backstroke," Patterson said. "Anna DeVries continues to be one of our top distance swimmers and works really hard."

Barton claimed a win in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:14.52 and Van Maanen finished second in 1:20.15.

NCMP did not register wins against Marshalltown in the 50 freestyle or the 100 butterfly.

In the 100 fly, Benson (1:09.95) was the winner against Hoover and the runner-up in the dual against Marshalltown. Lane (1:10.6) was second and third against those schools, respectively.

"All of our butterfly swimmers looked amazing," Patterson said. "They have worked so hard on their underwaters. We posted quite a few best times in that event. Shout out to Paige Benson, Izzy Lane, Addison Van Maanen, Avery Meyer, and Lauryn Garrett."

Ruggles and Riney were 1-2 against Hoover and 3-4 against Marshalltown in the 50 freestyle. Ruggles finished in 27.18 and Riney hit the wall in 27.64.

Marshalltown scored the only points in diving, finishing 1-2-3-4 but scoring varsity points in the first two positions.
