Archbishop Hoban High School announced the hiring of Derek Carmichael as its baseball coach on Tuesday.

Carmichael comes to Hoban after two years as a varsity assistant coach at Jackson High School and four years as a varsity assistant coach at Perry High School. Additionally, Carmichael has spent several years coaching in the Midwest Stars and Ohio Athletics programs, where he led summer teams and focused on player development year-round.

Carmichael inherits a Hoban baseball program coming off back-to-back appearances in the state championship game under former coach Andrew Bonnette. Hoban won the Division II state championship in 2021 and was the Division II state runner-up in 2022.

“I am extremely excited to lead the Hoban baseball program,” Carmichael said in a statement. “I have been blessed with great experiences throughout my coaching career that have led me to this opportunity. Hoban baseball has a strong foundation and rich history and together we will continue to pour all of our efforts into the success of the program. I look forward to further developing the players, program and the Hoban baseball brand."

Bonnette recently stepped down as Hoban's baseball coach to make a career change and spend more time with his family.

Bonnette compiled a 56-34 record as Hoban's coach from 2019-2022. The Knights had a 24-9 record and won the Division II state title in 2021, and then went 23-10 and were the Division II state runnner-up in 2022.

Hoban earned tournament wins over Warrensville Heights, St. Vincent-St. Mary, Triway, Revere, Chagrin Falls, Salem, Vermilion and Bloom-Carroll in 2021. The Knights finished the 2021 season with a 16-game winning streak.

Hoban's 2022 postseason run included wins over Springfield, Bay Village Bay, Norton, Sandusky Perkins, Tiffin Columbian and Hamilton Badin and a loss to Chardon.

Carmichael is a 2011 graduate of Triway High School where he was a three-sport captain. He went on to play baseball collegiately at the University of Akron and Malone University.

Carmichael's father, the late Sean Carmichael, led Triway baseball as its coach for more than 25 years and also served as athletic director. His mother, Angela, serves as a principal at Triway.

“Derek is one of the most impressive young educators and coaches I've met,” Hoban Principal T.K. Griffith said in a statement. “His pedigree is unparalleled, and his coaching experience on the field at Jackson and in the classroom at Perry bode well for the high level of expectations at Hoban.

"Like his father and mother, Derek is a person of integrity, class and values. I can't wait to see his vision come to fruition at Hoban.”
