From the Archives: Aug. 13 in the Pioneer

Aug. 13—August 13, 2012 — The third annual 5K-9 run and walk will be held in Bemidji to raise funds for a proposed dog park in Nymore. Efforts to make the park a reality have been ongoing since 2010, but so far the Nymore Dog Park Committee has only raised $2,500 of the estimated $75,000 that the park's construction will require.

August 13, 1997 — Local author and publisher Jan Haley has won a national award for her children's book "J. Rooker, manatee." Based on the real story of a manatee that was rescued and rehabilitated, the book was recognized for its storytelling and artwork. Haley hopes that her next book will see the same success.

August 13, 1972 — The Northern Minnesota Recycling Collection Center of Bemidji is celebrating its 100th ton landmark with a public event that will include speakers, demonstrations, and, most importantly, donuts and beverages. Part of the purpose of the event is to raise awareness about recycling and the impact it's had on the community.

August 13, 1922 — Bemidji mayor A.V. Garlock has declared war on the illicit peddling of intoxicating liquor, in an announcement at the Northern Minnesota Fair. Anticipating an influx of people to the area because of the attraction, the mayor also fears an increase in the distribution of illegal alcohol and asked for the public's cooperation.
