From the Archives: MSU's Munn Ice Arena, christened in 1974, has rich hockey history

Munn Ice Arena is the place to be as the Michigan State hockey team is enjoying one of its best seasons in years. The Spartans are ranked No. 7 and are in first place in the Big Ten Conference.

The arena, named after one-time football coach and athletic director Clarence L. "Biggie" Munn, has been home to the Spartans since 1974. The original building cost $4.5 million and at the time was one of five college-owned ice facilities in the Big Ten. The original facility held 6,700 seats.

Munn's most recent renovations and expansion, at a cost of more than $26 million, were completed in 2022. It now has a capacity of 6,114 and is home to the Ron Mason Hall of History, named after the coach who won 635 hockey games at MSU.
