Arden Fair mall owners purchase vacant building and parking lot of former Sears location

Arden Fair owners acquired the mall’s vacant Sears building and parking lot last month, which they hope to transform into a more modern retail presence.

Sears on Arden Way closed at the mall in 2021, and Sears associates had maintained control of the building until July 28, when mall owners officially acquired the roughly 156,000 square-foot retail space and 369,000 square-foot parking parcel, according to Arden Fair marketing director Nathan Spradlin.

The Sacramento Business Journal reported the lots were purchased for $7.85 million.

“We’re thrilled,” Spradlin told The Sacramento Bee. “This is something that for us has been years in the making. It’s been a few years to be able to get to where we are today, but we’re very excited about what opportunities of potential it gives for the center in the future.”

He said mall officials do not yet know what will fill the space but aim for a modern retailer who they feel meets the needs of Sacramento.

Nordstrom also vacated its residency at the mall in 2020, and mall owners acquired that vacant space in 2021, according to Spradlin.

Arden Fair now owns the entirety of the mall with the exception of the JCPenney and Macy’s sections, Spradlin said.
