BALTIMORE — There were several standout individual performances during the high school baseball season, but one clearly stood out above the rest.

Liberty Union senior pitcher Jacob Miller capped off a tremendous high school career with an outstanding season, and for his efforts, Miller is a unanimous choice as the 2022 Eagle-Gazette Baseball Player of the Year.

It marks the second year in a row that Miller has won the award.

Liberty Union’s Justin Miller, who led the Lions to a 25-6 overall record, a Mid-State League-Buckeye Division championship, as well as back-to-back district titles, and a trip to the state tournament, is the Eagle-Gazette Coach of the Year.

As for Jacob Miller, he was lights out all season. The senior right-hander finished this season with a 9-1 record and 133 strikeouts in 57 innings pitched.

Miller has won just about every postseason award out there. He was the Mid-State League-Buckeye Division Player of the Year, Central District Division III Player of the Year and earned first team All-Ohio honors.

He was recently selected as the 2021-22 Gatorade Ohio Baseball Player of the Year. The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence but also high standards of academic achievement, as well as exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Miller as Ohio’s best high school baseball player.

Miller helped lead the Lions to a Division III state semifinal appearance where he suffered his only loss of the season in a 4-3 defeat against Waynedale.

He fired a no-hitter in a 10-0 district win over Northmor and had 14 strikeouts, and in a 2-1 regional semifinal win over Ridgewood, he gave up one hit and struck out 15.

Miller has signed a National Letter of Intent to play baseball on scholarship at the University of Louisville but is projected as an early-round selection in next month’s Major League Baseball Draft. He is the state’s No. 1 recruit in the Class of 2022 as ranked by Perfect Game and the nation’s No. 24 recruit by the Prep Baseball Report. He is rated by Baseball America as the nation’s No. 13 high school prospect.

“To think how good, he was as a freshman and then to jump to where he is now as a kid that has a chance to get drafted in the first round, is special,” Justin Miller said. “It’s special because he is living the dream of a lot of kids. He is living his dream, but he is getting to bring 16 of his high school teammates along with him and he has been nothing but a great teammate. It has been a pleasure to watch him over the last four years and how he has handled himself.  He has been the best pitcher in Ohio the last two years, hands down.”

Over three high school seasons, Miller had 27 career starts and pitched 172 innings, and during that span, finished with an amazing 382 career strikeouts.
