Area baseball roundup: Gerritt Brandenburg's big day lifts Blackhawks over Webster

May 3—BRYANT — Gerritt Brandenburg haunted Webster Area on the mound and at the plate to send Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central to a 12-0 shutout Sunday in prep baseball action.

Brandenburg went 2-for-3 with four RBIs at the dish and did not allow a run on two hits, while fanning 11 in five innings of work.

Cooper Hainy also went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Blake Miller and Mason Schelske knocked in two runs apiece for the Blackhawks.

WWSSC (3-7) faces Sioux Valley Friday in Volga. Webster hosts Castlewood-Deuel Saturday.

WWSSC 6, Hamlin 2

BRYANT — A four-run second inning propelled Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central to a win over Hamlin Sunday.

Cale and Cole Mohling had back-to-back RBI singles in the second inning. Carson Hainy added two RBIs in the game, while Schelske allowed two earned runs on two hits and three walks, while striking out eight in six innings.

Xander Sheehan allowed three earned runs on two hits and seven walks, striking out five in five innings for Hamlin (3-4), which faces Castlewood-Deuel May 9 in Castlewood.

Howard 7, MHHWW 0

CANOVA — Samuel Callies did not allow a run in five innings as Howard blanked Miller/Highmore-Harrold/Wolsey-Wessington Sunday.

Callies tossed a five-inning shutout, allowing two hits and a walk, while striking out 12 batters. Colby Claussen also gave up one hit and one walk and fanned three in two innings of relief.

Riley Genzlinger and Jaxon Kampshoff both had two hits and an RBI. Jace Sifore, Luke Koepsell and Ryder Erickson each had an RBI.

Gunner Brueggeman surrendered four earned runs on five hits and four walks, while striking out four in five innings for MHHWW.

Howard (7-0) travels to Elkton on May 9. MHHWW (2-3) hosted Madison Monday in Miller.

Gregory County 7, Winner/Colome 2

GREGORY — Gregory County capitalized on seven Winner/Colome errors to score a win Sunday.

Gregory scored six runs in its last three innings at the plate, with three coming after an error. Rhoss Oliver and Rylan Peck both went 3-for-3 with an RBI. Sawyer Tietgen also drove in a run. Ben Witt allowed two earned runs on six hits and struck out six over 4 2/3 innings.

Aiden Barfuss went 4-for-4 for the Royals, while Zach Bohnet went 2-for-2 with an RBI. Charley Pravecek also added an RBI. Four Winner/Colome (4-4) pitchers allowed four earned runs on nine hits and six walks, while striking out nine.

Gregory County (5-2) hosts Platte-Geddes/Dakota Christian/White Lake/Corsica-Stickney Thursday in Gregory.

Chester/Colman-Egan/Flandreau 5, McCook 4

CHESTER — Chester/Colman-Egan/Flandreau scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to sink McCook Sunday.

CCEF tied the game on a wild pitch with two outs and Braden Peters delivered an RBI single moments later for the go-ahead run.

The Burros scored three runs in the top of the first, with Jackson Remmers and Avery Feterl each connecting on RBI singles. Jacob Wagner also added an RBI on a ground ball. Braeden Kerkhove allowed three earned runs on five hits and struck out three over 5 2/3 innings.

Tash Lunday did not allow an earned run on one hit and four walks, while fanning nine in 5 1/3 innings of relief for CCEF.

McCook (2-5) hosts Lennox Wednesday in Salem. CCEF (1-4) plays Sioux Falls Christian Tuesday in Flandreau.

Vermillion 15, Scotland/Menno 2

SCOTLAND — Vermillion scored four runs in the first inning and Scotland/Menno could not recover Sunday.

T.J. Tracy and Clayton Sorensen both had two hits and four RBIs for the Tanagers, while Jack Vitt allowed one earned run on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings.

Austin Pillsbury had the lone RBI for the Trappers, while Dawson Bietz and Treyton Sayler had two hits apiece. Four Scotland/Menno (2-7) pitchers allowed 15 earned runs on eight hits and six walks.

The Trappers host Canton Wednesday in Menno. Vermillion (8-5) faced Beresford Monday.
