Area basketball roundup for Dec. 8: Chamberlain girls down Class B No. 2-ranked Corsica-Stickney

Dec. 9—Despite a handful of games getting postponed due to weather, the boys basketball season got underway Thursday, while a multitude of girls games took place, too. Here's the action from around the state.

Girls

* As Chamberlain notched a victory over Class B No. 2 Corsica-Stickney 47-40, Jayna Handel picked up 17 points, six rebounds and three assists to lead the Cubs. The Jaguars got 11 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals from Payton DeLange in the defeat.

* Brooklyn Harpe poured in 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Sioux Falls Washington over Sioux Falls Lincoln.

* Avery Orth picked up a double-double with 20 points and 10 boards, while adding three blocks in Wessington Springs' win over Faulkton Area. Kirstie Munsen and Carissa Scheel chipped in 15 and 14 points, respectively.

Boys

* A 20-point showing from Jordan Stoltz helped push Mount Vernon/Plankinton past Kimball/White Lake. Zach Baker also contributed 14 points on the strength of a quartet of 3-pointers.

* Ryder Michalek posted 27 points, six rebounds and four assists while Brock Krueger added a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double with five assists and two steals in Wessington Springs' win over Faulkton Area. In the loss, the Trojans got 28 points, nine rebounds and five steals from Layne Cotton.
