Area basketball roundup for Dec. 9: Gerlach's late basket sends Ethan past Hanson
Dec. 10—ALEXANDRIA, S.D. — Rylan Gerlach's layup with 6 seconds remaining was the game-winning basket as Ethan picked up a road win at Hanson 50-49 in the season-opening game for both boys basketball teams on Friday.
Gerlach's layup came after Ethan forced a turnover down one with 16 seconds remaining. On the ensuing play, Hanson nearly won the game on a 35-foot 3-point try that rattled in and out, leaving the Rustlers as the winners. Drake Gustafson and Riley Endres each had 10 points for Ethan, which led 18-11 after the first quarter and then trailed 41-34 heading to the final period.
For Hanson, Jackson Jarding had 19 points to lead all scorers. Jayce Slaba had 14 points and Ethan Cheeseman finished with 11 points and 15 rebounds for the Beavers.
Ethan (1-0) hosts Andes Central/Dakota Christian on Tuesday, Dec. 13, while Hanson (0-1) is also in action at McCook Central/Montrose.
* Burke prevailed with a road win in overtime on Friday, 47-42, over Kimball/White Lake. The Cougars' Ellie Witt had 17 points and nine rebounds, while Adisyn Indahl scored 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds. KWL had a game-high 20 points from Harley Namanny and 10 points and 17 rebounds from Dani Deffenbaugh.
* Avon won a wild contest with Marty on Friday by a 64-63 decision. The Pirates trailed 22-15 after one quarter but led 50-45 going to the fourth quarter. Courtney Sees had 25 points and Lila Vanderlei had 20 for Avon, while Hawk Bair had 19 points and Jayla Bruguier had 15 points for the Braves, who were 10-for-34 from 3-point range.
* The defending Class B champions Viborg-Hurley got off on the right foot with a road win at Freeman, 60-44. Coral Mason had 28 points and 14 rebounds, while Estelle Lee scored 12. Erin Uecker had 15 points for the Flyers and Peyton McCune scored 11.
* Faith Oakley led a Parkston contingent of four double-figure scorers on Friday night in a 56-45 win over Tri-Valley. Oakley had 15 points, while Lauren Ziebart had 10 points and seven assists. Mya Thuringer and Abby Hohn each scored 10 as well.
* Mia Reiner had 13 points and 11 rebounds for Tripp-Delmont/Armour in a 46-21 home win over Menno. Megan Reiner added 12 points and seven steals and Kinley Spaans had eight points and nine rebounds.
* Canistota opened its season with a win over Centerville, powered by 29 points from Tage Ortman and a 13-point, 14-rebound double-double from Brandeon Kjetland. The Tornadoes had 17 points each from Logan Bobzin and Cole Edberg. The Hawks outscored Centerville, 19-8 in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.
* Mason Reiner scored 12 points to lead three players in double-figure scoring for Tripp-Delmont/Armour in a home win over Menno. Jaden Groeneweg had 11 points and Isaac Wunder had 10 points. Kadeyn Ulmer scored 11 points for Menno.
* Rugby Ryken scored 33 points for Yankton in a road win over No. 2-ranked Harrisburg, 66-61, on Friday.
* Tate Schafer had 16 points and JT Rock had 15 points and five blocks to help Sioux Falls Lincoln defeat Sioux Falls Washington, 60-56, on Friday. Lincoln had a 20-4 run in the second quarter to help make the difference.
