Area basketball roundup for Feb. 21: Hanson tops Platte-Geddes in Region 5A playoffs

Feb. 21—ALEXANDRIA, S.D. — Hanson outscored Platte-Geddes 40-11 in the second half to pull away for a 62-30 Region 5A quarterfinal victory on Tuesday night.

Taziah Hawkins had 17 points and Alyssa Moschell scored 13 points for the Beavers, with nine points added from Eliza Oltmanns. Karlie Goergen and Annalyse Weber each had five rebounds and Moschell had four steals.

For the Black Panthers, who closed the season at 9-21, Cadence Van Zee scored eight points and Karly VanDerWerff had seven points.

Hanson (16-5) will host Parkston in the Region 5A semifinals at a date and time to be determined.

ETHAN, S.D. — Top-seeded Ethan outscored Mitchell Christian 28-0 in the first quarter of a Region 3B girls basketball quarterfinal playoff game as Ethan cruised to a 66-12 victory on Tuesday night.

It was 30-0 before MCS got on the scoreboard early in the second quarter and Ethan led 40-7 at halftime. Ava Lingemann had 14 points for the Rustlers to lead all scorers.

Jasmyne Lessman had six points for the Golden Eagles. No other stats were reported for Mitchell Christian (0-20). The Golden Eagles end the season with a 23-game losing streak, which dates back to MCS' last win at Sunshine Bible Academy on Feb. 7, 2022.

Ethan (18-2) will play in the Region 4B semifinals against Colman-Egan in a game tentatively scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23 in Salem.

* Mount Vernon/Plankinton cruised by Sanborn Central/Woonsocket, 64-17, as Emilee Fox threatened a triple-double with 23 points, 10 rebounds and six assists and Reagan Rus tacked on 21 points and seven rebounds.

* Ashlyn Koupal dropped in 18 points with 10 rebounds, three assists, four steals and two blocked shots, as Wagner rolled to a 61-22 win over Kimball/White Lake in a Region 5A quarterfinal. Emma Yost and Macy Koupal chipped in 14 and 12 points, respectively, in the win.

* A 21-9 first-quarter start for Parkston powered to a 61-30 home win in the Region 5A playoffs over Bon Homme. Gracie Oakley had 15 points, Abby Hohn added 11 points and Lauren Ziebart scored nine points for the Trojans, while Jaden Kortan scored 10 points for BH.

* Corsica-Stickney's Avery Broughton recorded 20 points and 14 rebounds, as Payton DeLange pulled down nine rebounds with five assists in the Jaguars' 42-30 win over Avon in the Region 5B quarterfinals. For the Pirates, Lila Vanderlei and Courtney Sees scored 12 and 11 points, respectively and each had three rebounds.

* Winner opened its 73-34 win over St. Francis Indian with a 26-2 first quarter and never looked back in a Region 7A playoff game. Winner had 20 points from Kylie Sachtjen, while Cora Moss had nine and Karlee Brozik had eight. Sharlee Kills In Sight had 19 points for St. Francis.

* Allison Muckey finished with 21 points, nine rebounds and four steals and Josie Brouwer added 18 points, four assists and four steals, as Andes Central/Dakota Christian advanced through the Region 5B quarterfinals with a 65-37 win over Burke.

* Viborg-Hurley opened the game with a 27-1 lead after one quarter and 53-7 at halftime in an 84-14 win over Freeman Academy/Marion in the Region 4B quarterfinals in Hurley. Coral Mason had 24 points, six rebounds and seven assists, with Estelle Lee (14), Denae Mach (13) and Charley Nelson (12) also scoring in double figures.

* Cassidy Keiser scored 21 points for Gregory and Brecken Vosika had 16 points in a 68-33 win over Marty in Region 5B quarterfinal playoff game. Dani VanDerWerff had 11 points for Gregory and Hawk Bair scored 10 points for Marty. Gregory will face Wessington Springs in the region semifinals at the Corn Palace in a game tentatively scheduled for Thursday.

* Ashlin Jacobson scored 19 points and had six rebounds and Erin Uecker scored eight points and 10 rebounds in Freeman's 63-36 win over Centerville in the Region 4B playoffs. Ella Serck had 12 points for Arlington.

* Addalyn Steffensen scored 27 points on 11 for 17 shooting in Arlington's 83-38 win over Oldham-Ramona/Rutland in a Region 2B quarterfinals. Jaelyn Huntimer added 18 points, while Julia Trygstad had 20 for the Raiders.

* Castlewood's Madeline Horn put up 22 points, nine rebounds, three assists and four steals, while Mackenzie Everson added 18 points, four rebounds and three steals in a 64-39 win over De Smet in Region 2B quarterfinal action.

* Lennox topped Dakota Valley, 56-48, in the Region 4A quarterfinals behind 17 points from Andie Peters and 16 points with nine rebounds from Carli Kuyper. In the loss, Jorja Van Den Hul had 16 points and eight rebounds for the Panthers.

Boys basketball

* In the only area boys game to take place on Tuesday, Lyman won at Colome, 71-55, powered by 27 points and 15 points from Teagan Gourneau, while Ryker Choal had 22 points for the Raiders. Joseph Laprath scored 19 points for Colome and Alec Thieman had 17 points and 10 rebounds.

* Sioux Falls O'Gorman won a shootout with Huron, 87-71, with Matt Eng scoring 39 points. Reilyn Zavesky had 42 points for the Tigers.

* Sioux Falls Washington stayed white-hot with a fourth consecutive win over a ranked opponent, as the No. 3 Warriors took down No. 4 Yankton, 46-41, behind 16 points and eight rebounds from AJ Akot.
