Area Boys Golf: PCM wins sectional tournament, advances to districts

May 11—PANORA — Four PCM Mustangs finished in the top 12 and all four golfers carded scores lower than 90 during a Class 2A sectional tournament at Lake Panorama National Golf Course.

The Mustangs shot 335 as a team and edged runner-up Des Moines Christian (339) by four strokes on Tuesday. Both teams advanced to the district tournament.

Easton Van Veen led the Mustangs in fourth place, while his older brother Grant Van Veen was fifth. The duo turned in scores of 81 and 82, respectively.

Charlie Ford finished seventh with an 83 and Nick Farver had the final counting score of 89 in 12th.

Jeffrey McDanel (92) and Tate Tangeman (97) had non-counting scores. McDanel finished in the top 20.

Des Moines Christian had the top two individual scores. Carsen Theis was the meet medalist with a 75 and Will Latham was the runner-up with a 77.

The rest of the eight-team field included host Panorama (347), Woodward-Granger (359), Manson-NW Webster (363), Southeast Valley (383), ACGC (408) and West Central Valley (438).

The district tournament will be played at 10 a.m. on Monday at Carroll Country Club in Carroll.

L-S duo advances to 1A districts

LYNNVILLE — Career-best scores from Klayton Van Dyke and Lucas Sieck pushed the Hawk duo into a Class 1A district tournament on Wednesday.

Montezuma and South Hamilton were the top two team finishers at the 1A sectional tournament at Diamond Trail Golf Club.

The top two individuals not on a qualifying team also advanced to districts. That was Van Dyke and Sieck as they ended up sixth and eighth, respectively, in the final standings.

Van Dyke carded a career-best 82 at the Hawks' par 72 home course. Sieck turned in a career-best 83.

Keegan DeWitt finished 11th with an 87 and Carson Maston was 15th with a career-best 92.

Deven Liekweg (109) and Garrett Jansen (season-best 114) had non-counting scores.

The top two finishing teams advanced to districts. Montezuma won the sectional championship with a 311 and South Hamilton was the runner-up with a 331.

Host Lynnville-Sully (344), Grand View Christian (404) and Martensdale-St. Marys (445) completed the field. Baxter did not have enough golfers for a team score.

The Bolts' season ended at sectionals. Cody Damman led Baxter with a 95 and Hudson Bethards and Stadan Vansice shot 105 and 107, respectively. All three Baxter golfers had career-best scores.

Van Dyke and Sieck will play in a 1A district tournament at 10 a.m. on Monday at Crestwood Hills Golf Course in Anita.

Tigerhawk boys end their season at sectionals

PELLA — Cason Fitch led the Colfax-Mingo boys' golf team on Wednesday, but the Tigerhawks' season ended at sectionals following a seventh-place team finish.

Colfax-Mingo shot 466 at Bos Landen Golf Course. The top two teams advance to districts but the third-place team also moves on if the host school finishes in the top three.

That was the case on Wednesday. Host Pella Christian had five golfers under 90 and won the sectional championship with a 325. Albia and Pleasantville also advanced with 352 and 375, respectively.

The rest of the seven-team field included Van Buren (405), Interstate 35 (416), Madrid (442) and Colfax-Mingo (466). Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont did not have enough golfers for a team score.

Fitch carded a career-best 98 to lead the Tigerhawks. The other counting scores came from Jacob Riddle (career-best 116), Luke Allen (122) and Konner Bennett (130). Owen Ament (155) had a non-counting score.
