Three Indiana high school boys' basketball coaches, including Aaron Wolfe of NorthWood, have been chosen as 2023 Bob King Coaches of the Year by their peers in the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.

Wolfe of Class 3A state champion NorthWood, Don Carlisle of Class 4A state champion Ben Davis and J.B. Neill of Class A No. 1-ranked Bloomfield have been selected as honorees for the 2022-23 season through voting that occurred from late January through early March, IBCA executive director Marty Johnson said.

Honors are awarded according to IHSAA district boundaries, and one coach from each district is a recipient –Wolfe in District 1; Carlisle in District 2; and Neill in District 3. These three coaches will receive plaques as an IBCA District Coach of the Year during the 2023 IBCA Clinic, which is set for April 20-21 at Mt. Vernon High School in Fortville.

Wolfe is the IBCA District 1 Coach of the Year after directing NorthWood to a 28-2 campaign that included a 66-63 victory over Guerin Catholic for the Class 3A state championship. Along the way, his Panthers won the Northern Lakes Conference, the NorthWood Sectional, the South Bend Washington Regional and the Elkhart Semi-State.

Wolfe, in 16 seasons, has guided NorthWood to a 281-110 record with nine sectional titles plus his first regional, first semi-state and first state title this season.

Garber of Class 3A state champion Fairfield, Zach Newby of Class 2A state runner-up Lapel and Jeff Allen of Class 4A state champion Bedford North Lawrence have been selected as honorees for the 2022-23 season through voting that occurred from late January through early March, IBCA executive director Marty Johnson said.

Garber is the IBCA District 1 Coach of the Year after guiding Fairfield to a 28-2 season that included a 49-42 victory over Corydon Central for the Class 3A state championship. Along the way, his Falcons also captured Northeast Corner Conference, Fairfield Sectional, Jimtown Regional and LaPorte Semi-State trophies.

Garber, a former star athlete at Fairfield, has directed the Falcons to a 180-89 record in 11 seasons. This season was the best in program history, the Falcons claiming their first semi-state and state titles while adding their fourth sectional and third regional during Garber’s tenure.

Boys basketball: NLC salutes all-conference players

NorthWood boys basketball coach Aaron Wolfe and four of his players from his Class 3A state championship team have earned All-Northern Lakes Conference honors.

Wolfe, who guided the Panthers to the NLC crown at 7-0, was named NLC Coach of the Year. Seniors Cade Brenner and Ian Raasch were named first team All-NLC, along with sophomore Tyler Raasch. Junior Ethan Wolfe was named honorable mention All-NLC.

Also tabbed as first team choices were seniors Quinn Bechtel (Goshen), Arthur Jones (Mishawaka), Alex Ellenson (Northridge), Davis Wray (Plymouth), Jaxson Gould (Warsaw) and Drew Heckaman (Warsaw). The first team also included juniors Braeden Messenger (Concord), Gage Worthman (Goshen) and Brady Fisher (Mishawaka) and sophomore Mason Bales (Northridge).

Named as honorable mention All-NLC were seniors Deegan Hill (Goshen), Nolan Bales (Northridge) and Easton Strain (Plymouth), along with sophomores Lucas Prough (Concord) and Maddux Everingham (Wawasee).

NorthWood claimed the NLC title at 7-0. Warsaw was second at 5-2, followed by Mishawaka (4-3), Concord (3-4), Goshen (3-4), Northridge (3-4), Plymouth (2-5) and Wawasee (1-6).

College tennis: Saint Mary's Alayna Campbell honored

Saint Mary's sophomore Alayna Campbell was named as the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week on Monday, March 27.

Campbell, a graduate of Saint Joseph's High School, went undefeated on the week with a combined 6-0 record at one doubles and two singles for the Belles.
