Area Briefs: Penn's Markus Burton headlines locals to Top 60 Workout

A strong group of area seniors, headlined by Mr. Basketball candidate Markus Burton of Penn, are expected to take part in the Top 60 Senior Workout Sunday in Indianapolis.

Burton, a Notre Dame recruit, averaged 30.3 ppg. in leading No. 2 Penn to the Class 4A semistate title game last Saturday.

The Top 60 list also features Cade Brenner and Ian Raasch of Class 3A state finalist NorthWood. Also picked to participate are Josh Gatete (Penn), Jamie Hodges Jr. (Michigan City), J.J. Morris (Argos), Deaglan Sullivan (Marian), Cooper Farrell (Culver Academy) and Nolan Cumberland (Tippecanoe Valley).

Also selected to the workout but unable to attend were Brycen Hannah (John Glenn) and Austin Cripe (West Noble). Jaxson Gould of Warsaw was also selected but is unable to attend due to injury.

The list of seniors for the workout, held by Hooser Basketball Magazine, was selected from approximately 1,500 across the state. Players will participate in two sessions at Marian University, one from 1-3 p.m. and the other from 3:30-5:30 p.m. The workout is open to the public. Admission is $8 per person and $5 for elementary age children.

Cepeda resigns as Concord girls basketball coach

Cassie Cepeda has resigned as the girls basketball coach at Concord High School.

Cepeda was 62-98 in seven seasons in charge of the Concord program. Her best seasons were 14-9 in 2018-19 and 15-8 in 2019-2020, the program's first two winning seasons since 1993. Concord finished 5-18 overall and 0-7 in the Northern Lakes Conference in the 2022-23 campaign.

Cepeda will remain at CHS as a business teacher.

Saint Mary's Caitlin Traxler honored

Saint Mary's College senior Caitlin Traxler was honored as the MIAA Position Player of the Week.

Traxler, a second baseman and Bremen native, hit .522 with a 1.261 slugging percentage as the Belles went 3-5 to open their season last week in Florida. She had five home runs, two doubles, 11 RBI, 14 runs scored and six walks.

IBCA tabs All-State boys basketball cagers

A trio of area cagers have received top honors on the IBCA/Franciscan Health All-State boys basketball teams for the 2022-23 campaign.

Penn senior Markus Burton and NorthWood senior Ian Raasch were named to the Senior Supreme 15 group. Sophomore Chase Konieczny of Saint Joseph was tabbed for the Underclass Supreme 15 unit.

Named as Large School All-State were seniors Cade Brenner of NorthWood, Jamie Hodges Jr. of Michigan City and Deaglan Sullivan of Marian.

Chosen as Small School All-State were seniors Lukas Balling of Michigan City Marquette and Brady Yoder of Westview.

Seniors earning honorable mention honors were Austin Cripe (West Noble), Nolan Cumberland (Tippecanoe Valley), Joey Garwood (Penn), Ameer Harris (Clay), Ben Keil (Lakeland), Tayde Kiser (Tippecanoe Valley), Marcus Northern (Washington), Joe Smith (Penn) and Darreon Thornton (Marian).

Named as Large School All-State on the underclassmen team was sophomore Tyler Raasch of NorthWood.

Honorable mention choices for underclassmen were Bradyn Barth (West Noble), Allen Briggs (Michigan City), Tyson Chupp (Bethany Christian), Aiden Hibbard (Elkhart Christian Academy), Steven Reynolds (Washington) and Ethan Wolfe (NorthWood).
