Area canoeists take gold medals at United States Canoe Association National Championships

Aug. 17—NEWAGO, Mich. — Two area canoe racers, Peter Heed of Keene and Michael Fairchild of Brattleboro, took home gold medals over this past weekend, by winning their age group (Grand Veterans) at the United States Canoe Association National Championships held at Newago, Michigan.

Paddlers from all over the country came to compete on the 14 mile course on the Muskegon River. Heed and Fairchild's class winning time was 1:52:47.

The course included a quarter mile portage around a dam and numerous sections of shallow rapids. Heed and Fairchild have won their age group four out of the last five years. The Grand Veteran class covers ages 70 to 75.
