Area football roundup for Aug. 27: McCook Central/Montrose tops Hot Springs in low-scoring affair

Aug. 28—HOT SPRINGS, S.D. — Boston Katzer's 2-yard touchdown run in the third quarter put the game out of reach and helped lead McCook Central/Montrose to a 16-7 win over Hot Springs on Saturday night.

Katzer also threw for a touchdown in the second quarter, connecting with Ty Morrison for an 8-yard score to put MCM up 8-0 after the 2-point conversion. Landon Iverson brought Hot Springs back, though, with a 34-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to make it 8-7 before MCM pulled away for good.

Iverson finished with 110 yards on the ground for Hot Springs, while Katzer threw for 155 on 13-for-23 passing for MCM.

Despite the loss, Hot Springs outgained MCM 227 to 219 and ran for 199 yards as a team as opposed to MCM's 64 yards, but the Fighting Cougars only surrendered 28 passing yards to Hot Springs.

MCM (2-0) will put its undefeated record to the test against Baltic on Friday, Sept. 2, while Hot Springs (1-1) will take on Lakota Tech at home on Friday.

MILLER, S.D. — A strong second half for Mount Vernon/Plankinton was enough for a 17-point road win over Miller/Highmore-Harrold on Friday night.

Reed Rus' only completed pass of the game went for an 18-yard touchdown to Jordan Stoltz with 17 seconds left in the second quarter, giving MVP a 6-0 lead. The Titans extended their lead to 14-0 early in the third when Christopher Mayer, who finished the contest with 79 yards on the ground, rushed for a 27-yard touchdown.

Tate Hoffman answered back with one of his two touchdowns on the night for Miller/Highmore-Harrold, this one a 1-yard rushing score to make it 14-7. After Rus and Drew Gerlach found the endzone for MVP to make it a 30-7 game in the fourth quarter, Trey Knox found Hoffman for a 42-yard touchdown for the final score of the night.

Gerlack and Mayer led a relatively even rushing attack for MVP, with Gerlach picking up 83 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown, and Mayer chipping in 79 yards on 10 touches and a score. Rus also ran for 45 yards in the win.

Knox finished 13-for-24 through the air for 214 yards and a touchdown and an interception for Miller/Highmore-Harrold, while Hoffman had 65 rushing yards and 104 receiving yards on six catches. Miller/Highmore-Harrold outgained MVP 262 to 251 on 10 fewer plays.

MVP (2-0) will face Tripp-Delmont/Armour/Andes Central/Dakota Christian at home in an early battle of unbeaten teams on Friday, Sept. 2. Miller/Highmore-Harrold (1-1) is set to play Jim River on the road Friday.

MARTIN, S.D. — Tripp-Delmont/Armour/Andes Central/Dakota Christian's early explosion was more than enough for a convincing 37-20 win over Lakota Tech on Saturday.

The Thunderhawks scored the game's first 31 points and didn't surrender any until under a minute left in the first half. Sabas DeHaan found the endzone on a pair of 1-yard touchdown runs. Hunter Loeffler also scored twice in the first half, once from 9 yards out and once from 23 yards out, and Garth Maas ran a 1-yard touchdown in, too.

Lakota Tech connected on a 61-yard touchdown pass to Domonic Ghostbear right before half to make it 31-8. Ghostbear scored again to start the second half on a 12-yard touchdown pass to bring it to 31-14, but Riley Spaans 7-yard touchdown catch early in the fourth put the game out of reach, despite a Quincy Means touchdown run near the end of regulation.

Maas led the rushing attack for the Thunderhawks, finishing with 61 yards and a touchdown, while Loeffler had 57 yards and two scores. Defensively for the Thunderhawks, Payton Westendorf had four tackles for loss, including a sack.

Means ran the ball 10 times for Lakota Tech for 130 yards and a score, while Ghostbear had 82 receiving yards and took two of his four catches to the house.

The Thunderhawks (2-0) will take the field again on Friday, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. against Mount Vernon/Plankinton in Mount Vernon, while Lakota Tech (0-1) will travel to Hot Springs to take on the Bison on Friday at 6 p.m.
