AREA FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Harrold snaps 40-game losing streak

HARROLD – The longest losing streak in Texas high school football is over.

Harrold earned a 44-26 victory against Chillicothe in District 6-A Division II play Thursday, bringing a close to the Hornets’ 40-game losing streak.

It was the Hornets’ first win since Oct. 31, 2014, when they defeated Northside, 61-15. Since then, Harrold has struggled with enrollment numbers and didn’t field a team for three straight seasons from 2017 to 2019.

The Hornets returned to the field in 2020 but had continued to struggle finding six players to field a team and played much of the 2021 season with just five players.

They were 0-9 entering Thursday night but completed the 2022 season on a high note.

The state’s longest losing streak now belongs to Class 6A program Aldine, which finished 0-10 this season and had lost 34 consecutive games.

DISTRICT 2-5A DIVISION II

RIDER 57, LUBBOCK HIGH 0

LUBBOCK – Rider erupted for 36 points in the second half of a 57-0 victory against Lubbock High in District 2-5A Division Ii action Friday at Lowrey Field.

The win locked the Raiders (7-3, 4-1) into the No. 2 playoff seed out of 2-5A DII, giving them a bi-district home playoff game for the fifth consecutive season. The Raiders host El Paso Chapin at a time to be determined Friday at Memorial Stadium.

Lubbock High (2-8, 0-5) has completed its season.

The Westerners at least succeeded at keeping the ball out of Rider’s hands for much of the first half.

“We only ran around 20 plays in the first half. They played ball control, and I bet they probably had it 20 of the 24 minutes in the first half,” Rider coach Marc Bindel said. “They were milking the clock to try to shorten the game.

“We got the opening kickoff in the second half and scored, then forced a turnover and it was on. We turned up the defensive pressure and the offense was cooking.”

Despite limited opportunities in the first two quarters, the Raiders led 21-0 at halftime, getting rushing TDs from Jordon Gibbs, Tyrone Morgan and Jack Pitts.

Gibbs had the first TD of the second half on a long run, then Pitts threw consecutive TD passes to Tobias Oliver and Baylor Wilson, respectively.

Senior Anquan Willis got his first rushing touchdown since returning from injury last week, and Kenji Johnson rounded out the Rider scoring, running into the end zone in the fourth quarter.

The Raiders are entering the playoffs for the 13th consecutive season and have advanced to at least the fourth round in four straight years. However, the postseason path will be more difficult than in the four previous seasons with a potential second-round matchup with No. 1 Argyle looming.

That doesn’t dampen Bindel’s confidence in his team.

“I feel good, and I’m excited to see how this team performs in the playoffs,” Bindel said. “We’ve got the talent to compete with anybody in the state. I know the path is tough. We start with a good team in Chapin, and if we win, then we’ll get ready for another good team. If it’s Argyle, then we’ll get ready to give them our best game.”
