Area football roundup for Sept. 30: MVP moves to 7-0 with win at Wagner

Oct. 1—WAGNER — A fast start in the first half powered Mount Vernon/Plankinton to a 40-0 lead and helped the Titans improve to 7-0 this season in Class 11B football with a 48-24 win over Wagner on Friday night.

The Titans tallied 411 yards on 43 plays and did so exclusively on the ground without a pass attempt. Reed Rus rushed eight times for 204 yards and three touchdowns, including an 84-yard touchdown run in the game's opening minute. Drew Gerlach had 55 yards on seven carries and two touchdowns, and Brady Fox and Christopher Mayer rushed for 60 and 51 yards, respectively for MVP. On defense,

Chris Nelson had 119 yards passing on 9-for-17 attempts, and 30 yards rushing with a touchdown for Wagner, while Jhett Breen had 43 yards on 15 carries and a touchdown. Riley Roberts caught five passes for 72 yards. Bain Kuhlman also had a fumble return for a touchdown for the Red Raiders to go with his seven tackles on the night.

MVP (7-0) closes the regular season with a home game against Winner on Oct. 14 in Mount Vernon. Wagner (2-5) is also off next week and plays at Tri-Valley on Oct. 14.

GARRETSON — Hanson coach Jim Haskamp earned his 200th career coaching victory on Friday night with a victory over Garretson.

Weston Kayser had 89 yards and a touchdown on only two rushes, while Hadley Wallace added two touchdowns and 82 yards after only running the ball four times. Cole Dewald, Jackson Jarding, and Brock Tuttle all had a score on the ground, with Dewald rushing for a 68 yard touchdown and Jarding posting 52 total yards. Wallace had seven tackles on the defensive side as well.

Hanson (5-1) faces Viborg-Hurley at home on Oct. 7 and Garretson (0-6) travels to Irene-Wakonda on Oct. 7.

GREGORY — Parkston scored with 39 seconds left to topple Gregory on the road.

Kolten Kramer had 19 carries for 123 yards for the Trojans in the win, and Luke Bormann added nine rushes for 95 yards and a score. Parkston forced three fumbles on the game and recovered two of them, while also intercepting a pass and blocking a punt. Kaleb Weber added a pair of touchdowns on the ground, including the game-winning, 1-yard plunge.

For the Gorillas, Rylan Peck went 9-of-16 through the air for 213 yards and a trio of touchdowns. Eli Fogel caught two of those touchdowns and totaled three receptions for 135 yards.

Parkston (6-1) plays its final game of the season against Bon Homme on Friday, Oct. 7. Gregory (5-1) travels to Burke on Oct. 7.

AVON — Avon knocked No. 4 Alcester-Hudson from the ranks of the undefeated teams in Class 9B football on Friday night with a strong showing at home.

Paxton Bierema rushed for 177 yards on 15 carries and scored three times, including on rushes of 65, 40 and five yards. Brady Bierema made his season debut to the field off a knee injury and rushed for 80 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown, plus made eight tackles and an interception. In all, Avon rushed for 434 yards and 20 first downs in the victory.

The Cubs' Mateo Kleinhans accounted for three touchdowns, rushing for 72 yards and two scores and was 12-for-23 passing for 149 yards and one touchdown. Dominic Van Egdom had 14 total tackles on defense.

Avon (4-3) will host Wolsey-Wessington on Oct. 14, while Alcester-Hudson will host Irene-Wakonda on Oct. 14.

WESSINGTON SPRINGS — Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central earned the home victory to win its fifth game of the season.

Holden Havlik threw 15-for-22 for 162 yards, including a 12-yard touchdown pass, Camden Jost had 79 yards, three rushing touchdowns on 19 runs, and nine tackles, while Blake Larson had eight receptions for 90 yards and a touchdown. Brady Larson ran the ball 11 times, adding 69 yards and a score for the Blackhawks. Toby Kneen picked up 12.5 tackles.

WWSSC (5-2) closes the regular season on Oct. 14 with a road trip to Rapid City Christian. Mobridge-Pollock (3-4) is also off next week and will host Groton Area on Oct. 14.

TYNDALL — Bon Homme came out on top over Chester Area in three quarters, putting up 56 points in the first half alone.

Isaac Crownover had five total scores for the Cavaliers, including two rushing touchdowns, 30-yard and 32-yard receiving touchdowns, and a 19-yard blocked punt for a touchdown. Riley Rothschadl threw 6-of-9 for 99 yards and 3 touchdowns while rushing for 118 yards and a 48-yard touchdown. Jackson Caba and Landon Bares both added touchdowns for Bon Homme too. Chapin Cooper led the defense with nine tackles.

Bon Homme (5-1) travels to Parkston on Oct. 7 and Chester Area (3-4) is off next week before facing Howard on Oct. 14.

MENNO — Flandreau staked itself to a 21-0 lead and then held on late for a two-point victory in an 11-man football contest on Friday night.

Ajay Herrboldt's second rushing touchdown of the night early in the fourth quarter put the Trappers within two points but the ensuing two-point pass failed and that was the final scoring salvo of the night. Flandreau finished with a 228-202 edge in yards, bolstered by 176 passing yards, while Jim River rushed 43 times for 195 rushing yards. Flandreau's Paul Parsley was 10-for-21 passing for 165 yards and two touchdowns, including one to Ethan Hoffman, who had three catches for 90 yards. Lane Johnson had a rushing touchdown and Kolby Peters had the other touchdown catch.

Herrboldt finished with 114 yards on 12 carries, while Logan Sayler had 70 yards on 19 carries and a touchdown. Stephen Johnson had a team-best nine tackles for the Trappers. Jim River was a combined 3-for-18 on third and fourth downs, including 1-for-6 on fourth downs.

Flandreau (3-4) is off next week before an Oct. 14 home game with Sioux Valley. Jim River (3-4) closes the regular season with an Oct. 7 game against Tripp-Delmont/Armour/Andes Central/Dakota Christian in Scotland.

MARION — Freeman/Marion/Freeman Academy's Riley Tschetter threw for 386 yards and five touchdowns on Friday night, as the Phoenix improved to 5-1 on the season with a home win over Gayville-Volin.

Tschetter was 19-for-31 passing, and rushed seven times for 73 yards and a rushing touchdown. Maddon Kihne had six catches for 173 yards and two touchdowns, and Evan Scharberg had 106 yards on four receptions and two touchdowns, helping FMFA gain 502 yards of offense and overcome four turnovers. Taylor Goodwin had a game-high 15 tackles for the Phoenix.

The Pirates had 425 yards of their own. G-V rushed for 244 yards on 49 carries, including three touchdowns on the ground from Ben Rumsey and 157 yards on 22 carries and a touchdown from Cade Gunderson.

FMFA (5-1) travels to Corsica-Stickney on Oct. 7, while Gayville-Volin (0-6) is set to host Arlington on Oct. 7.

COLOME — Colome put up 32 points in the second half on its way to a win over Sunshine Bible Academy.

Eli Vobr ran the ball 12 times for Colome, picking up 135 yards and three scores. Kash Heath tallied 134 yards on the ground on 16 tries with a touchdown and caught a 41-yard touchdown. Seth Heath and Jonah Musser also recorded rushing touchdowns for Colome.

Colome (3-3) plays at Centerville on Oct. 7, while Sunshine Bible (0-6) plays at Oldham-Ramona/Rutland on Oct. 7.

TRIPP — Deuel ran up 447 yards of total offense and 19 first downs to power its way to a 50-0 win over Tripp-Delmont/Armour/Andes Central/Dakota Christian in 11-man football on Friday. The game ended early in the fourth quarter due to the 50-point rule.

Owen Quail rushed 16 times for 88 yards and four touchdowns, and Dominic Constant and Carson Marko also scored on touchdown runs, as the Cardinals held a 447-39 edge in total yards at night's end.

Hunter Loeffler led the Thunderhawks in offensive yards with 29 receiving yards. Riley Spaans had eight tackles for TDAACDC, which was held to one first down on the night and turned the ball over twice.

Deuel (6-1) will travel to Redfield on Oct. 14, while TDAACDC (2-4) will head to Scotland to play Jim River on Oct. 7.

VIBORG — Howard racked up the yards and points against Viborg-Hurley on Friday, running its win streak to 19 games. Howard had 453 total offensive yards, including 397 yards on the ground in the road nine-man win.

Griffin Clubb led Howard with 151 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 12 attempts. Karsyn Feldhaus ran the ball 28 times to pick up Howard 119 yards, while Will Maier scored two touchdowns and had 39 yards on eight rushes. Quarterback Taden Hoyer rushed the ball five times for 67 yards.

For Viborg-Hurley, Luke Campbell rushed 11 times and picked up 100 yards and both of the team's touchdowns. Kaedon Maunu had 13 tackles and two sacks on defense.

Howard (7-0) is off next week, but will travel to face Chester Area on Oct. 14, while Viborg-Hurley (4-3) heads over to Hanson on Oct. 7.

DELL RAPIDS — Kimball/White Lake picked up its first win of the season, knocking off Dell Rapids St. Mary.

Iden Myers led the KWL offense, rushing for 176 yards and two scores on 14 tries, while Nathan Mohnen added 65 yards on eight carries and a pair of touchdowns. Defensively, Lucas Lenz racked up 3.5 tackles for loss, two sacks and 5.5 total tackles, all of which led the team.

CJ Smith was 4-of-5 through the air for 37 yards and a touchdown for Dell Rapids St. Mary, and Trimmier Hanson completed his only pass for a 63-yard touchdown.

KWL (1-5) moves on to play Wall at home on Friday, Oct. 7, while Dell Rapids St. Mary (3-4) has an off week before it plays its final game of the regular season at Estelline/Hendricks on Friday, Oct. 14.

WHITE — Canistota rushed for 359 yards and scored 46 points in the first half to earn a road win on Friday night in nine-man football action.

Noah Kleinsasser rushed nine times for 74 yards and three touchdowns, while Easton Miller, Cayden Scott and Tage Ortman all rushed for touchdowns. Ortman finished with 125 yards on 10 carries, plus had 52 passing yards. Kleinsasser had seven total tackles and Camrin Thompson had two sacks for the Hawks.

Canistota (3-4) ends the regular season on Oct. 14 hosting Platte-Geddes. Deubrook Area (4-3) will play a Dakota Valley Conference crossover opponent to be named on Oct. 14 in White.
