Area football roundup for Sept. 9: MCM improves to 4-0 with shutout over Blackhawks

Sep. 10—FORESTBURG — A strong night on both sides of the ball lifted McCook Central/Montrose to a road victory on Friday night, earning a 40-0 win to improve to 4-0 on the season over Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central in Class 11B action.

Jackson Remmers finished with four rushing touchdowns for the Fighting Cougars, including three in the first half. Jackson Grady had an 18-yard touchdown pass from Boston Katzer, as well, that helped MCM lead 26-0 at halftime. MCM closed the scoring late in the fourth quarter with a fumble recovery from Carter Randall, who dove on a loose ball in the end zone for a score. Randall and Mason Sabers each had interceptions for MCM in the victory.

For the host Blackhawks, Holden Havlik forced an MCM fumble, which was recovered by Brady Larson. No other statistics were available from the game.

MCM hosts Elk Point-Jefferson on Sept. 16. WWSSC (2-2) will face Miller/Highmore-Harrold on Sept. 16 in Wessington Springs.

MOUNT VERNON — Reed Rus had a rushing touchdown in each quarter to lead Mount Vernon/Plankinton to a home victory over Class 11B foe Jim River on Friday night.

MVP, the No. 5-ranked team in Class 11B, rushed for 222 yards and 20 first downs. Rus finished with 117 yards on 25 carries and had touchdown runs of 3, 5, 12 and 27 yards in the win and had nine tackles on defense. Drew Gerlach rushed for 50 yards on 10 carries for the Titans, who had 1 1/2 sacks from Daniel Laufman and Gerlach and Brady Fox each had interceptions on defense.

For the Trappers, Ajay Herrboldt had 132 yards on 21 carries and a first-quarter touchdown run of 39 yards. Tyrus Bietz had 12 tackles for Jim River on defense, with Logan Sayler picking off a pass.

MVP (4-0) plays at Rapid City Christian on Saturday, Sept. 17, while Jim River (1-3) visits Baltic on Sept. 16.

KIMBALL — Behind four touchdown passes from Dawson Hoffman, Platte-Geddes cruised to a Class 9AA win, its first of the season, over Kimball/White Lake on Friday night.

Hoffman connected with three different receivers — Aiden Bultje (twice), Joey Foxley and Parker Bailey — for scores covering 16, 28, 31 and 41 yards on his way to completing 13 of 23 attempts for 211 yards. Bultje was the top receiver with three catches for 88 yards, trailed by four for 67 and three for 45 by Bailey and Foxley, respectively. Jye Bailey led the Black Panthers on the ground with 41 yards on five carries. On defense, Foxley intercepted three passes and had five tackles, including one for loss, as Parker Bailey and Riley Timmerman also intercepted one KWL pass apiece.

Iden Myers was the bright spot within the Wildkats' offense, recording 131 yards rushing on 25 attempts. Carter Lenz has two receptions for 38 yards and led the KWL defense with 4 1/2 tackles.

Platte-Geddes (1-2) returns home to host Viborg-Hurley on Sept. 16, while KWL (0-4) hosts Gregory on Sept. 23.

LAKE ANDES — Wagner held Tripp-Delmont/Armour/Andes Central/Dakota Christian scoreless over the final three quarters to notch a victory in Class 11B action on Friday night.

Chris Nelson went 8-for-10 passing for 115 yards and one touchdown, a 13-yard strike to Glenn Cournoyer for Wagner's first points. Jhett Breen added a 30-yard scoring run in the third quarter as part of his 23 carries for 79 yards, while Cournoyer caught four passes for 98 yards.

For the Thunderhawks, Garth Maas totaled more 100 total yards, rushing for 85 yards and a touchdown and adding 19 receiving yards on 26 touches, as Mason Reiner passed for 39 yards and rushed for 31 yards. On defense, the Thunderhawks recorded eight stops behind the line of scrimmage, with Payton Westendorf and Dalton Westendorf combining for five of the tackles for loss.

Wagner (1-3) hosts Sisseton on Sept. 16, while TDAACDC (2-2) hosts Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central on Sept. 23.

BURKE — Colome churned out 314 yards rushing to play spoiler on the road at Burke in a nine-man football game on Friday night.

Kash Heath led the way for the Cowboys on the ground, running for 155 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries. Quarterback Eli Vobr added 75 yards rushing to go with 127 yards passing and two scores, as Kaden Pechota caught both touchdowns and added a third on ground, finishing with 114 total yards.

Burke had 298 total yards (210 passing and 88 rushing) as a team, but was hindered by three turnovers, including two Colome interceptions.

Colome (2-1) returns home to host Sully Buttes on Sept. 16. Burke (0-4) plays host to Corsica-Stickney, also on Sept. 16.

PARKER — Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan's defense carried the day against Parker, with Class 11B No. 2 BEE holding the Pheasants to 94 yards of offense in a Seahawk win on Friday.

Macklen Weber had 69 yards on nine carries and 46 yards passing, including a passing touchdown to Sutton Arend for 21 yards to get BEE on the scoreboard early. Riley Endres added a pair of touchdown runs in the third quarter to widen the advantage. Aguer Van Sickle had 11 tackles, including four for a loss for BEE and Sutton Arend and Kean Stevenson each had interceptions for the Seahawks.

Parker's only points came on a safety in the second quarter when Jacob Schoffelman tackled Endres in the end zone. Ray Travnicek had 40 yards on 13 carries for the Pheasants.

BEE (4-0) is at Sioux Valley on Sept. 16 in Volga. Parker (0-4) plays at Clark/Willow Lake on Sept. 16.

CORSICA — Corsica-Stickney's 242 yards on the ground carried the Jaguars to a 14-point home win over Centerville in a nine-man football game on Friday night.

Shad Bosma rushed 11 times for 51 yards and three touchdowns and threw for 95 yards on 6-for-13 passing. Waylon Bolle rushed 11 times for 73 yards and a 59 yards touchdown, while Carter Wright had 62 yards on 13 rushes and Tate Talsma had 56 yards on 16 rushes. Wright added nine tackles on the defensive end, as well.

Cole Edberg completed 21 of his 34 passes to pick up 264 yards and three touchdowns as well as 10 tackles for the Tornadoes. Austin Bohlman caught the ball seven times for 110 yards, including a 47-yard touchdown. Noah Schoenfelder and Alec Austin each caught a touchdown, with Schoenfelder recording 49 yards and Austin adding 40 yards. Lane Johnson added 14 tackles in the effort.

Corsica-Stickney (3-1) travels to Burke on Sept. 16., while Centerville (0-4) hosts Gayville-Volin on Sept. 16.

WINNER — Class 11A No. 4 Beresford limited Class 11B No. 1 Winner to its fewest points since the 2020 state title game, but were unable to capitalize, as the Warriors blanked the Watchdogs in a battle of unbeatens on Friday night.

Aiden Barfuss rushed 14 times for 144 yards and two scores to lead the Warriors on offense. Riley Orel added eight carries for 67 yards and quarterback Blake Volmer scored on a 1-yard plunge to open the night's scoring. Winner's defense, led by 5 1/2 tackles from Jack Kruger, surrendered just 95 yards of offense to the Watchdogs, who ran 43 plays (2.2 yards per play).

Tate VanOtterloo went 7-for-17 passing for 38 yards with an interception, while Peyton Fridrich was Beresford's top rusher with 16 attempts for 64 yards.

Winner (4-0) hosts Lead-Deadwood on Sept. 17, while Beresford (2-1) hosts Flandreau on Sept. 16

FLORENCE — Class 9A No. 4-ranked Canistota dominated Florence/Henry, keeping the Falcons to negative offensive yards in a lopsided win on Friday night.

Tye Merrill picked up 144 yards and two touchdowns on 14 rushes. Tage Ortman threw 8-for-13, putting up 131 yards and two touchdowns, including a 68-yard scoring pass to Cayden Scott. Ortman also had 41 rushing yards and a touchdown. Joseph Bond scored the final touchdown for Canistota with a 6-yard rush in the third quarter. The Hawks opened the scoring in the game with a pair of safeties, with tackles from Deshon Thompson and Noah Kleinsasser scoring the defensive points.

Tegan Sumner was a bright spot on defense for the Falcons, recording 12 tackles.

Canistota (2-2) hosts Elkton-Lake Benton on Sept. 16, while Florence/Henry (1-2) will host Waverly-South Shore on Sept. 16.

VIBORG — Bon Homme ended Viborg-Hurley's undefeated start to the season, scoring three touchdowns in the first half to secure a 20-point win, Friday night.

Riley Rothschadl led the Cavaliers with 99 rushing yards on 18 attempts and 62 passing yards scoring three touchdowns, two on the ground and one in the air. Landon Bares caught an 18-yard touchdown and added 62 yards in four receptions, while Jackson Caba picked up nine tackles and a sack for the Cavaliers.

Luke Campbell rushed the ball 10 times for 50 yards, and Chance Schoellerman added seven tackles and a sack.

Viborg-Hurley (3-1) heads over to Platte-Geddes on Sept. 16. And Bon Homme (2-1) hosts Stanley County on Sept. 16.

GAYVILLE — Avon's defense was up to the task on Friday night, as the Class 9B No. 4 Pirates preserved a road shutout of Gayville-Volin to pick up their third win of the season.

Noah Watchorn and Jaden Stahl had almost identical rushing efforts to lead Avon, with Watchorn carrying 13 times for 86 yards and one touchdown and Stahl picking up 85 yards and a touchdown of his own on 12 attempts. Landon Mudder also rushed eight times for 48 yards. Defensively, the Pirates allowed just 157 total yards on 39 plays, as Terran Talsma, Kley Heumiller and Landon Thury all had tackles for loss.

Gayville-Volin picked up 88 yards through the air via the arm of Spencer Karstens, who completed 9 of 14 attempts, with three completions going to Ben Rumsey for 71 yards. Cade Gunderson had 15 carries for 57 yards to lead the Raiders.

Avon (3-1) is on the road at Hitchcock-Tulare on Sept. 16, while Gayville-Volin (0-3) is also on the road to take on Centerville.

PRESHO — A big night through the air powered Lyman to a nine-man football victory over White River on Friday night, as the Raiders moved to 4-0 on the season.

The passing connection of Teagan Gourneau and Cooper Long connected seven times for 125 yards and three passing touchdowns in the game, including two in the first 5 minutes of the game. They were Gourneau's only completions of the game. Tance Wagner had 90 yards rushing on five carries and a 32-yard touchdown run, and Rory McManus rushed for 89 yards on nine carries and added an 18-yard touchdown run, with Gourneau also adding a rushing touchdown in the game.

White River rushed for minus-8 yards in the loss but gained 199 yards through the air. Kenderall Cuevas hauled in an 85-yard touchdown pass from Gavin Folkers for the Tigers' only score in the second quarter. Cuevas finished with 129 yards on six catches and Folkers was 15-for-28 passing in the game.

Both teams will see Wall in their next action, with Lyman (4-0) facing them on Sept. 23, after White River (1-3) hosts the Eagles on Sept. 16.

MARTIN — Gregory kept Bennett County from getting a first down in a 50-0, mercy-rule win on Friday night.

Rylan Peck only threw two passes on the night, but they both went for scores, as Owen Hansen reeled in a 27-yard pass and Kade Stukel hauled one in for a 35-yard score to enact the mercy rule.

Peck also had a 24-yard punt return touchdown to open the scoring for Gregory. Stukel added a rushing touchdown as a part of his three carries for 61 yards, while Luke Stukel led the team with nine touches, running for 43 yards and a score. Hansen also chipped in a rushing touchdown and intercepted a pass.

Gregory (3-0), who's the No. 1 team in Class 9A, will host Irene-Wakonda in its next contest at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 16, while Bennett County (0-4) will travel to New Underwood on at 6 p.m. on Friday.
