Area Happenings: 'Once Upon a Mattress', jazz concert, wellness walk

"Once Upon a Mattress," 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday; 2 p.m. Sunday, Ashland University's Hugo Young Theatre; “Once Upon a Mattress” is based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale “The Princess and the Pea.” Tickets can be purchased from the AU campus store in person or by going to ashland.universitytickets.com. Tickets are $2 for AU students, $5 for non-AU students and $10 for adults, faculty/staff and senior citizens. Tickets will not be available for purchase at the door.

Free Community Meal, 5-6 p.m. Thursday, Jeromesville Lutheran Church, 18 E. North St. The meal includes a variety of homemade soups, ham and cheese sliders, fruit and brownies. This is a free meal for anyone who could benefit from a home-cooked meal. For delivery to a shut-in in Jeromesville or the surrounding area, call Sue at 419-282-1926.

Relay For Life Chili Cook-off & Quarter Paddle Auction, 6 p.m. Friday, Ashland County Fairgrounds. Cook-off is by donation and includes the chili, salad and dessert. The community can vote for their favorite chili entered by the public and relay teams ($5 per entry). A Celebration of Wooster Jazz Vocalists, 7:30 p.m. Friday, Gault Recital Hall of Scheide Music Center, 525 E. University St., College of Wooster. Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo combined concert, along with guest vocalist Alyssa Allgood.

Winter Wellness Walk, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Heartland Trail trailhead, West Market and Depot streets near the Railroad Heritage Depot, Millersburg. Maps will be provided. Registered walkers are eligible to win one of two $20 Bellstore gift cards. The free event is open to community members as a way to celebrate healthy winter activities.

Civil War Round Table, 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, Wooster Branch of the Wayne County Public Library. Presentation is Intrepid Mariners, the saga of the only major battle between ocean-going vessels in the Civil War.

Cabin Fever Soup Supper, 4:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, Castle Club Banquet Center next to Victorian House, Millersburg. Soup offerings are broccoli cheese, chili, potato and signature ham and bean. There will be cornbread, French bread and apple sauce plus chocolate eclair dessert, and cherry pretzel dessert. Ten Weeks of Tasty, 8- 10 p.m., begins Thursday, Feb. 23, downtown Wooster. Ten Weeks of Tasty is all about enjoying the flavor of Historic Downtown Wooster. Each drink shop and restaurant brings their own signature flare to their establishment, and we want to highlight them for it. Sponsored by Main Street Wooster.

54th Annual Pancake and Sausage Day, 7 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, March 11, Northwestern High School. Sponsored by the Northwestern Ruritan Club. Dine in and drive-by pick-up. Cost is $8 per meal, $7 seniors (over 65), $5 children 6 to 10, free to children under 5 years old. Proceeds go toward Northwestern community projects. Auction features more than 300 listings with a variety of goods, services and experiences. There will be an online auction March 3-10. Funds raised support the Fair Balance Fund, which allows students’ families to pay variable rates of tuition fairly based on income and resources.

Since 2001, local members of Altrusa International, a volunteer service organization, have helped make prom dreams come true for more than 2100 girls by providing them with a free prom dress.
