AREA HAPPENINGS: Relay for Life of Ashland County-Mid Ohio
The Relay for Life of Ashland County-Mid Ohio will be Saturday, June 4 from 4 to 10 p.m. at the Ashland County Fairgrounds.
This annual event raises money for the American Cancer Society to fight cancer.
The Survivor Ceremony kicks off the event at 4 pm. The Ashland County K-9 Unit will have a demo and a MedFlight helicopter also will be landing during the event.
Laps of Love for the children effected by cancer will be around 7 pm. The luminaria ceremony honoring and remembering our loved ones is at 9 p.m. This will include a video of those who have lost the battle and those still fighting.
The public is welcome to submit pictures for the video. Email picture, name of person and if it is “In Memory” or In Honor” to relayforlifeluminaria@gmail.com.
The ceremony will wrap up this year's Relay For Life. There are many other events and activities also planned during the six-hour relay including dessert and silent auctions, Touch-A-Truck, poker run, frozen T-shirt contest. There also will be food and other fundraisers at the team sites.

Great Lakes Fiber Show
The Great Lakes Fiber Show celebrates its 30th year when it opens at 10 a.m. Saturday May 28 at the Wayne County Fairgrounds in Wooster. One of the largest fiber festivals in the country, it continues Sunday, May 29. With more than 100 vendors, hand-spun yarn and hand-made garment contests, a wool fleece show and sale, and daily sheep dog demonstration, there is something for everyone. Art in Motion
Richland Academy of the Arts will be having their 2022 Dance Recital, “Art in Motion,” on Friday, May 27 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, May 28, at 3 p.m. at Mansfield Senior High.
Students in this recital are dancers ages 6-18, featuring jazz, tap, ballet, pointe, modern, and lyrical dance styles; choreographed by Sarah Horrigan-Ramos, Marden Ramos & Erin Wolford. Richland Academy’s four pre-professional training dance companies, rade, rade jr., radKidz, and radKidz2, will also be featured in these performances.
“The idea behind ‘Art in Motion’ is that every dance in this recital represents a specific piece of artwork, such as famous pieces like the Mona Lisa, Starry Night, and others,” says Sarah Horrigan-Ramos, Dance Department Chair at Richland Academy. “This recital not only highlights our wonderful dancers and all the hard work they’ve put into their training this year, but also a combination of how multiple arts disciplines can inspire each other.”
Richland Academy of the Arts recommends that tickets are purchased prior to the performance to avoid long wait lines at the door. Tickets will also be available for purchase at the theatre. A limited supply of flowers will be on sale for the dancers in the show. Masks are not required. Tickets to the show are on sale now for $15 Adult, $10 Student, Senior, or Veteran. Teddy Bear Concert
The Renaissance Theatre will host the final Teddy Bear Concert of its 2021-22 season on Sunday, June 5 at 2:30 PM in Shelby, OH. A part of the Mechanics Bank Education Series, this outdoor event provides a live concert experience for young audiences and their families.
Kids are encouraged to bring their favorite teddy bear or stuffed animal and enjoy a free performance featuring the story of Little Red Riding Hood.
Adapted by Renaissance Theatre Artistic Director, Michael Thomas, this Teddy Bear Concert is an engaging musical adaptation which features audience participation, interactive storytelling with local actors, and an array of fun music provided by the Woodwind Duet featuring Mansfield Symphony musicians.
The Little Red Riding Hood concert will be held at Shelby’s Black Fork Commons Amphitheater venue (in Shelby, Ohio), with audience members sitting in close proximity to performers. Geared to children ages 2 through 10, each Teddy Bear concert offers an interactive element as well as a relaxed environment. Small audience sizes, and low sound levels as well as safe, open outdoor spaces allow audience members with autism, and other sensory needs, to be accommodated at this performance. Families are encouraged to bring their favorite teddy bears, their own lawn chairs, or other seating, and to be mindful of weather conditions in the area on the day of the concert.
Tickets are free for the outdoor concert, with donations accepted, and are available on the day of the concert. Mohican Adventure Hunt
The Mohican Adventure Hunt is slated to kick off on Saturday, June 11 at the Cleo Redd Fisher Museum in Loudonville. The adventure hunt is a hybrid scavenger hunt that sends teams racing across the Mohican area to discover landmarks, find rare items, and complete unusual — and often hilarious — tasks.
“It’s a bit like a mixture of a traditional scavenger hunt and The Amazing Race,” said the museum’s curator, Kenny Libben.
Each landmark, find, or task is assigned a point value and teams must submit photographs or videos to prove they completed it. The first team to complete all tasks, or the team with the most points at the deadline, wins.
The hunt was first held last year with more than 50 participants competing for the cash prize and bragging rights. Though no team completed the entire list last year, Team Atterholt took home the top prize by narrowly edging out others with 49 completed tasks.
“We weren’t quite sure how well the tasks would be received,” stated Libben, “but by the end of the event it was obvious everyone loved it and begged us to bring it back.”
This year, the first-place team will win a $125 cash prize, and second place will go home with a $50 cash prize. The cost to register is $40 per team (vehicle), with a discounted registration for members of the museum.
The event kicks off at 10 a.m. and teams have three hours to complete their list of tasks — after which everyone is encouraged to return to the museum to find out how they stacked up against the competition. There are 50 challenges on the list of tasks, but they aren’t revealed until the starting bell rings for the event. According to Libben, the list is a closely guarded secret — not even the other event staff know what it entails.
Those interested in registering can do so on the museum’s website, www.crfmuseum.com/events until June 5. Participants will need a vehicle, and at least one smart phone to send in photos or videos proving completion of their tasks. The museum is also seeking volunteers to help keep score during the event — which mostly entails verifying completion of tasks and marking off tasks on each teams list. Volunteers will be provided lunch during the event.

Disney’s Aladdin Jr.
The Wayne County Performing Arts Council will present Disney’s Aladdin Jr. in June 2022. The event location is Fisher Auditorium 1680 Madison Avenue, Wooster. Sponsored by The Ohio State University College of Food, Agricultural & Environmental Sciences. Shrek the Musical
The Loudonville Theatre and Arts Co and Committee (LTAC) will perform Shrek the Musical for five performances at the Ohio Theatre in downtown Loudonville. Performances are Saturday, June 18 at 7 p.m., Sunday, June 19 at 2 p.m., Friday, June 24 at 7 p.m., Saturday, June 25 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, June 26 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors, $10 for students and free for children 4 years old and younger (as long as space is available).
