Area high school football roundup: Canistota pulls away from Platte-Geddes

Oct. 15—CANISTOTA — Noah Kleinsasser's three rushing touchdown day helped Canistota get past Platte-Geddes, 22-8, in a nine-man football battle on Friday afternoon.

Kleinsasser had runs of 17, 10 and 1 yard for touchdowns on a 25-carry, 163-yard day, plus 31 yards receiving. Tage Ortman had 65 yards on 17 carries and was 7-for-11 passing for 69 yards for the Hawks. Ortman had an interception on defense and Kleinsasser and Levi Schroeder each had eight tackles.

Joey Foxley had the lone touchdown for P-G, a 28-yard run in the first quarter, and finished with 49 yards on 11 carries. Dawson Hoffman was 19-for-30 passing for 201 yards and an interception, connecting most with Aiden Bultje for five receptions and 56 yards. The Black Panthers earned a safety late in the fourth quarter, as well. Lee Reiser had a team-high 10 tackles on defense.

Both teams wrap the regular season at 4-4, with Platte-Geddes bound for the Class 9AA playoffs and Canistota to play in the Class 9A bracket.

ALEXANDRIA — A 39-point first half helped Hanson close out the regular season in Class 9AA with a home victory over Colome on Friday.

Hanson gained 397 yards in the game, including 253 on the ground on 25 carries. Brock Tuttle had eight carries for 124 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Hadley Wallace had 119 yards on six carries and a touchdown. Jayce Slaba had a pair of touchdown passes, including a 42-yarder to Ethan Cheeseman and a 20-yard scoring connection with Jackson Jarding. Slaba finished 4-for-4 for 144 yards passing, plus had a 1-yard touchdown run. Jackson Jarding also had a 62-yard punt return touchdown for the Beavers, while Cheeseman finished with 85 yards on two catches. Tuttle finished with a team-high 11 tackles.

Jonah Musser had a pair of second-half touchdown runs for Colome, including one from 74 yards out. He finished with 19 carries for 144 yards and Eli Vobr rushed eight times for 42 yards for the Cowboys.

Hanson (7-1) is in position to host a first-round playoff game on Oct. 20 in Class 9AA, while Colome (4-4) prepares for a road playoff game in Class 9B.

MARTIN — Kimball/White Lake scored 33 first-half points and added to the lead in the second quarter to earn a Friday afternoon win at Bennett County in nine-man football action. The game ended at halftime due to the 50-point rule.

The Wildkats' defense held Bennett County to minus-27 yards on 26 plays in the game, including minus-42 yards on 22 carries, plus three fumble recoveries. On offense, Iden Myers had three carries for 102 yards and a touchdown, as KWL rushed for 352 yards on 29 carries and finished with 369 yards overall. Carter Lenz, Jaxon Christensen, Park Sinclair, Lucas Lenz, Jaxon Pursell and Nathan Mohnen each had touchdown runs, with Lenz logging 65 yards and Christensen tallying 49 yards and Sinclair recording 48 rushing yards. Blake Leiferman caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from Lenz for the only pass reception of the day.

KWL closes the regular season at 2-6, while Bennett County closes the season at 0-8.

PRESHO — Lyman's offense proved to be too much for Lemmon/McIntosh, putting up 446 yards and eight touchdowns on Friday.

Tance Wagner ran the ball 14 times to pick up 168 yards and two scores, including an 83-yard touchdown in the first minute of the game for Lyman. Teagan Gourneau had two rushing touchdowns and was 7-for-13 passing for 110 yards and a touchdown pass to Michael Cooper, who had five receptions for 84 yards. Kellen Griffith ran for two scores and 74 yards on five rushes, while Rory McManus had 66 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

For the Cowboys, Sawyer Thompson posted 142 yards and an 11-yard touchdown throw to Emmit Maher, going 9-for-26 from the field. Hiroshi Picklesimer had two receptions for 62 total yards as well.

Lyman (7-1) awaits Class 9A playoffs, while Lemmon/McIntosh finishes the season off with a record of 2-6.

GREGORY — Gregory closed out the regular season with a home win over rival Bon Homme on Friday night.

The Gorillas led 23-0 late in the third quarter after Kade Stukel's 89-yard touchdown run. Stukel finished with 155 yards on 20 carries, while Rylan Peck had 74 yards on 11 carries and a touchdown and Trey Murray had 68 yards on four carries and a 35-yard score. Gregory finished with a 385-230 edge in total yards in the game.

Eli Fogel had 11 tackles and two sacks, and Trey Murray had 10 for the Gorilla defense.

Riley Rothschadl had two touchdown runs and rushed 23 times for 96 yards for the Cavaliers. Jackson Caba had 11 tackles for the Bon Homme defense.

Gregory (7-1) and Bon Homme (5-3) are now headed to the postseason.

AVON — A 26-point first quarter powered Wolsey-Wessington to a road victory on Friday night in nine-man football action.

Blaze Herdman had a big night passing, tossing for 333 yards and three touchdowns on a 14-for-22 effort, and rushed for another one. He connected five times with Tate French for 162 yards and a touchdown. In all, W-W had 451 yards of offense, while Joey Hoverson and Moshe Richmond also made touchdown catches.

Avon gained 229 of its 237 yards on the ground. Paxton Bierema had six carries for 82 yards, which included a 71-yard touchdown run, plus a game-high 12 tackles. Brady Bierema had an eight-yard touchdown scamper, as well.

Wolsey-Wessington (5-3) heads to the Class 9A playoffs, while Avon (4-4) is bound for the Class 9B postseason.

FREEMAN — Freeman/Marion/Freeman Academy defeated Florence/Henry in a Class 9AA clash to close out the regular season.

FMFA's Riley Tschetter threw 15-for-23 for 244 yards and four touchdowns, including a 68-yard pass to Evan Scharberg. Maddox Kihne scored four touchdowns as well, three coming on the receiving end of passes from Tschetter and one touchdown toss of his own to Scharberg. In all, Kihne caught 10 passes for 135 yards and rushed nine times for 70 yards.

Tegan Sumner led the Flyers with nine completed passes for 95 yards, a rushing touchdown and six tackles. Mehki Keller had an 81-yard kick return touchdown as well 50 yards on three receptions. Adam Moe and Clay Trupe each had eight solo tackles.

FMFA (6-2) and Florence/Henry (4-4) both prepare for the Class 9AA postseason.

COLTON — Playing with its back against the playoff cut-line in Class 11B, Tri-Valley rolled to a home win over Wagner on Friday night.

The Mustangs, who sat at 15th in the standings coming into the night's action, sprinted out to a 34-0 halftime lead, adding a pair of second-half scores before the Red Raiders offered their lone reply of the contest.

Tri-Valley (4-4) was led by Eli McFarland's four-touchdown night, as the quarterback passed for 67 yards and one score and added 61 yards and three scores rushing. Colby Carruthers chipped in 84 rushing yards and one touchdown on six carries, while Landyn Reiser and Brody Dybvig also found the endzone on the ground.

For Wagner (2-6), Riley Roberts accumulated 108 yards receiving on six catches, with Gannon Knebel and Chris Nelson combining to go 9-of-20 for 123 yards at the quarterback spot. Knebel scored the Red Raiders' lone touchdown on a 2-yard run in the fourth quarter.

GAYVILLE — Burke picked up its first win of the season on Friday night, earning a road win at Gayville-Volin in nine-man action.

Sawyer Tietgen had 75 yards on 14 carries and a pair of touchdowns, helping the Cougars build a 20-0 lead early in the third quarter. Gentry Bartling had a pair of touchdown runs for Burke, and made an interception on defense. Breven Bolander had a team-high eight tackles for Burke.

Spencer Karstens had 233 yards passing for G-V on a 14-for-24 night, with two touchdowns, both to Hunter Wuebben, who had five catches for 155 yards. Ben Rumsey added a touchdown run for the Raiders, and had a game-high 15 tackles on defense. The Raiders outgained Burke 299-148 for the game but were 2-for-9 on third downs and 2-for-7 on fourth downs.

Both teams finished the regular season at 1-7.

CHESTER — On Friday night, Howard beat Chester Area in a nine-man contest, putting up 576 total offensive yards, split between 351 yards on the ground and 225 yards in the air.

Griffin Clubb picked up 150 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown on seven attempts as well as 115 receiving yards, including a 62-yard touchdown, on only two receptions. Taiden Hoyer went a perfect 5-of-5 throwing 158 yards and three touchdowns of 17, 42 and 62 yards and ran for a touchdown, too. Luke Koepsell had three receptions for 71 yards and two touchdowns, while Will Maier and Karsyn Feldhaus each contributed a rushing touchdown.

Layke Wold threw 8-for-15 for 54 yards and had 64 rushing yards from 11 attempts for the Flyers. Alfred Frankenhoff ran for a 95-yard touchdown in the closing minute of the game while Garrett Hansen had 8.5 tackles on the defensive end.

Howard (8-0) looks forward to the Class 9AA playoffs, while Chester Area finishes with a record of 3-5.

BRIDGEWATER — Elk Point-Jefferson rushed for 271 yards in a win over Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan on Friday night, allowing the Huskies to seal an undefeated regular season and the Big East Conference title.

Lucas Hueser, Ben Swatek and Noah McDermott each had rushing touchdowns, with Hueser scoring twice and rushing for 115 yards on 15 carries. EPJ had 361 yards in all, while McDermott threw for 90 yards as well.

Sutton Arend had two touchdown catches from Macklen Weber, including a 40-yarder for BEE. Arend finished with 79 yards on 20 carries and 50 yards receiving. BEE was led on defense by Jayden Eddy's eight tackles and seven tackles each from Korbyn Kayser, Aaron Horvath and Aguer Van Sickle.

Both teams will play in the Class 11B playoffs on Oct. 20.

MILLER — A strong defensive effort helped Miller/Highmore-Harrold earn a home victory over visiting Tripp-Delmont/Armour/Andes Central/Dakota Christian on Friday night in Class 11B action.

Trey Knox threw for 108 yard and three touchdowns, plus rushed for 77 yards on 12 carries to help the Rustlers earn the win. Gunner Brueggeman had 60 yards and a touchdown on four catches.

TDAACDC scored twice on special teams, with Hunter Loeffler returning a kickoff 82 yards for a score and Jeff Schnabel scoring on a blocked punt return. Joaquin Pulido also added a 30-yard field goal. Payton Westendorf had 12 tackles for the Thunderhawks, who also had an interception from Schnabel.

TDAACDC (2-6) and MHH (3-5) end the regular season.
