Area high school students earn academic scholarships

Pennsylvania Highlands Community College recognized the outstanding work of the area high school students that were awarded a Penn Highlands Community College-Sponsored Academic Scholarship.The Presidential Scholarship is awarded to high school seniors in the region that demonstrate outstanding excellence in academics and extracurricular activities. Eligible students must achieve a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 in their high school career, participate in various activities, and demonstrate outstanding leadership throughout their community.Presidential Scholarship recipients receive $3,000 per semester to attend Pennsylvania Highlands Community College to complete an associate degree. Those who have received the 2022 Presidential Scholarship are Kelly Hearn of Rockwood, Rockwood Area High School, and Trinity Stewart of Windber, Windber Area High School.The Emerging Leader Scholarship is awarded to high school seniors in the region that demonstrate excellence in academics and extracurricular activities. Eligible students must achieve a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 in their high school career, participate in various activities, and demonstrate leadership throughout their community.Emerging Leader Scholarship recipients receive $1,000 per semester to attend Pennsylvania Highlands Community College to complete an associate degree.Those who have received the 2022 Emerging Leader Scholarship from Somerset County are:Quinn Charney of Windber, Forest Hills Jr/Sr High SchoolHannah Dadura of Johnstown, Conemaugh Township Area High SchoolElijah Ketley of Hollsopple, Conemaugh Township Area High SchoolHannah Miller of Berlin, Berlin Brothersvalley High SchoolHannah Tallion of Windber, Windber Area High School

Pennsylvania 4-H’ers earn high rankings at national shooting sports championship

Pennsylvania 4-H’ers competed in the National 4-H Shooting Sports Championship in Grand Island, Nebraska. The competition included 691 participants from 39 states.Like all 4-H programs, the 4-H shooting sports curriculum is focused on positive youth development and teaching life skills. With guidance, training and supervision from adult mentors, 4-H shooting sports provide a positive experience for youth and promote the safe and ethical use of firearms and archery equipment.From Somerset County was:Small-bore rifle: Noah Lehman and Zachary Tedrow.Compound archery: Logan HutchisonThe Pennsylvania small bore team placed second in the overall team ranking. For the .22 rifle three-position event of standing, kneeling and prone, the Pennsylvania team earned first place. Individually in that category, Lehman earned fourth and Tedrow sixth.In the small-bore silhouette category, the Pennsylvania team earned second place, with Tedrow ranking seventh.

Thompson at Somerset Lions

Jacob Douglas Thompson, son of Amy and Doug Thompson, Somerset, was selected as the Somerset Lions Club senior of the month for September.Thompson is a senior honors student at Somerset Area High School. He participates in track, rifle, baseball, football, wrestling and swimming. He is on the honor roll, a member of the Spanish Honor Society, and took first place in a debate competition.After graduation he hopes to student physical therapy in college.

Steltzer is Lions student

Susie Steltzer, daughter of Scott and Anna Steltzer, Boswell, was selected as the Boswell Lions student of the month for September.

Steltzer is a senior honors student at North Star High School. She is involved in volleyball, Mu Alpha Theta and volunteers at the elementary school. She is also involved in Crossroads Ministry student leadership. She attends St. Paul's Presbyterian Church.

After graduation, Steltzer plans to pursue becoming an elementary school teacher.
