Boys: Oklahoma Union 40, Caney Valley 31

When a team shoots only 1-of-18 from the three-point line, victory is about as likely as a banana malt coming out of a cow’s udder.

On the other hand, “Our defense was just great,” Caney Valley head coach Tug Brinker said. “We just could not put the ball in the hole.”

Tate Longan and Rocky Hester each scored eight points for Caney Valley, followed by Ethan Brown with seven.

Oklahoma Union is led by coach Brad Hall, who came out of retirement.

Girls: Caney Valley 48, Oklahoma Union 32

Caney Valley slowly took control, thanks to a variety of scoring weapons — Sammi Gilbreath, 13 points; Jade Upton, nine; Chloe Scherman, eighth; Libby Thompson and Kensly Foreman with six apiece; and others.

Sammi Sheaffer put in 11 points for Oklahoma Union.

The lead stayed around eight to 10 until the past part of the game, Caney Valley coach Deric Longan said.

Girls: Nowata 52, Dewey 32

First-year Nowata head coach Thad Hewitt made a winning debut.

Nadean Stamps scored 16 for Nowata, followed by Madi Barnes with nine and Kennedy Nubel with eight.

C.J. Holmes scored nine for Dewey, also led by a new coach, Michael Sanders.

“We just kind of settled down and played well,” said Hewitt. “We just kind of got lucky and settled down a little faster than they did.”

Boys: Nowata 65, Dewey 55

As expected, it turned out to be a fierce battle between the rivals. Nowata had more “oomph” this time, thanks to 40 combined points by Spencer Bullen (22) and Skyler Stevens (18).

Yahmarion Cole added 16.

Jeremiah Highsmith tallied 13 for Dewey, followed by Jace Williams (12) and Colby Miller (11).

“We missed a lot of shots,” said Dewey coach Lance Knight, adding his players made little mistakes “that were momentum killers.”

“We scored the ball really well,” said Nowata coach Nate Smith, who praised the work at point guard by Stevens.
