Area Legion baseball roundup: Hunter Van Nieuwenhuyse powers Gregory County to win over Valentine, Nebraska

Jul. 8—VALENTINE, Neb. — Hunter Van Nieuwenhuyse smacked a three-run homer, drove in six runs and struck out eight batters to power Gregory County to an 8-1 American Legion baseball win over Valentine, Nebraska, on Wednesday.

Van Niewenhuyse finished 2 of 4 at the plate. On the mound, he allowed two hits, one earned run and walked five batters in six innings.

Bryce Frank pitched one inning of relief and allowed no hits and struck out two batters. Offensively, Frank recorded three hits and knocked in a run.

Sawyer Tietgen, Ben Witt and Carson Klundt finished with two hits. Rylan Peck and Kade Braun each had a hit. Peck drove in a run.

Gregory County (6-2) plays at Winner/Colome on July 14 in Winner.

Winner/Colome 13, Bennett County 5 (5 innings)

WINNER — Winner/Colome racked up 10 hits and used two five-run innings en route to an American Legion baseball win over Bennett County on Wednesday.

Winner/Colome scored five runs in the second and third innings to power the victory. The Royals tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning to complete the five-inning win.

Landon Thieman paced the offense with three hits and three RBIs. Jesse Colson and Kameron Meiners each drove in two runs. Aaron Gilchrist, Evan Farner, Ashton Klein, Joey Cole and Boston Morehart each had a hit. Gilchrist, Farner, Klein and Cole each had an RBI.

Elye Whitemouse earned the win. He allowed three hits, three earned runs, walked three batters and struck out two batters in four innings. Klein pitched one inning of relief. He allowed one hit and zero runs.

Winner/Colome (7-6) plays at Platte/Geddes on Friday.

Vermillion 6, Alexandria 0

VERMILLION — Vermillion blanked Alexandria in an American Legion baseball action on Wednesday.

Alexandria finished with three hits in the defeat, while Vermillion recorded eight hits. Vermillion plated three runs apiece in the third and fourth innings to secure the win.

Alexandria's Chase Arend, Kade Waldera and Hayden Bahmuller each had a hit. Jayden Kayser took the loss. He allowed eight hits, six runs (four earned runs), struck out three batters and issued three walks in 4 2/3 innings. Hunter Robinson pitched 1 2/3 innings of relief. He struck out three batters, allowed no hits, no runs and walked one batter.

Alexandria (5-9) plays at Platte-Geddes on Monday.
