AREA MENU: Holliday-Idalou meet in Top 10 showdown

WEEKLY SPECIAL

IDALOU AT HOLLIDAY

When/where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Eagle Stadium

Live updates: Follow @trnsports on Twitter. Listen on 103.9 FM.

Records: Idalou 2-0; Holliday 2-0.

Last game: Idalou 14, New Deal 9; Holliday 41, Jim Ned 19

Last meeting: Idalou 59, Holliday 17 (2015 bi-district playoff); Idalou leads all-time series 2-0.

Players to watch: William Wall (QB/LB, Sr.), Malakhi Brisco (RB/DB, Sr.), Gage Pounds (TE/DL, Sr.); Holliday, Peyton Marchard (QB/DB, Sr.), Collin Hays (RB/LB, Jr.), Jaxx Johnson (RB/LB, Sr.).

Why it’s tasty: This is one of two matchups in the area between opponents ranked in the top 10 of its respective classification by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football. Holliday moved from fifth to third, while Idalou held at No. 10 in the latest Class 3A Division II poll. … Holliday has played two quality opponents from the Class 3A Division I ranks, and its starting defense made it difficult for Iowa Park or Jim Ned to find consistency on offense. Junior Collin Hays has been the team’s top tackler with 26. … Idalou narrowly avoided being upset by quality Class 2A Division I foe New Deal last week, winning a low-scoring affair, 14-9. The Wildcats only had 253 yards in the win. The Wildcats have started a different quarterback in each game. Senior Cooper Ross was behind center in the team’s 38-20 victory against Sweetwater, while senior William Wall lined up there vs. Idalou.

PREMIUM ENTREES

LUBBOCK CORONADO AT RIDER

When/where: 7 p.m. Friday, Memorial Stadium

Live updates: Follow @Hull_TRN and @Naomi_TRN on Twitter. Watch on the WFISD YouTube channel or WFISD Facebook page. Listen on www.network1sports.com/station/riderraiders.

Records: Coronado 1-1; Rider 2-0.

Last game: Midland High 27, Coronado 21; Rider 30, Decatur 24 (OT)

Last meeting: Coronado 51, Rider 13 (2020); Coronado leads all-time series 6-1.

Players to watch: Coronado, Jett Carroll (QB, Sr.), John Curry (LB, Sr.), Cam Manahan (DB, Sr.); Rider, Anquan Willis (RB/DL, Sr.), Jack Pitts (QB, Sr.), Jailyn Gibbs (DL, Jr.).

Why it’s tasty: Coronado is probably the best team Rider has faced so far this season. The Mustangs boast multiple Division I college prospects, including quarterback Jett Carroll, a Texas Tech commit. Defensive back Cam Manahan has offers from Missouri, UTSA and Texas State, while offensive lineman Karson Young has received interest from Army, Navy and Air Force. … Of course, Rider has its own Division I prospects, namely running back and pass-rush specialist Anquan Willis, who is firmly committed to Texas Tech. Senior defensive lineman Luke Gambs has multiple Division I FCS offers. … Coronado continues to be a pass-first offense with Carroll completing 39 of 62 attempts for four TDs and three interceptions in the Mustangs’ first two games. His top receiver is junior Surreal Garrett, who has caught 11 passes for 167 yards and three TDs. … Rider’s offense has had its struggles in the first two weeks, but its defense has been dominant. Last week, they kept Oklahoma Sooner commit Nate Palmer in check. While Palmer finished with 100 total yards on 22 touches, 52 of those yards came on two plays. Otherwise, Rider kept the dynamic back bottled up.

HIRSCHI AT SPRINGTOWN

When/where: 7 p.m. Friday, Porcupine Stadium

Live updates: Listen on www.network1sports.com/station/hirschihuskies.

Records: Hirschi 2-0; Springtown 1-1.

Last game: Hirschi 37, Brock 30 (OT); Springtown 35, Graham 13.

Last meeting: Hirschi 40, Springtown 30 (2021); Springtown leads all-time series 8-4.

Players to watch: Hirschi, A’Marion Peterson (RB, Sr.), Jamarion Carroll (WR/DB, Sr.), Javian Frazier (DL, Sr.); Springtown, Hudson Hulett (QB, Jr.), Speck Behle (WR, Sr.), Jeremy Morrow (OL, Sr.).

Why it’s tasty: These two former district foes have played an entertaining series in the past four seasons with each team winning two. The Huskies and Porcupines also established themselves as Region I-4A Division I powers until the Huskies dropped to Division II this season. … Springtown’s offense is under the direction of third-year starting quarterback Hudson Hulett, who has struggled with his accuracy through two games, completing just 43 percent of his passes for 338 yards, five TDs and no interceptions. But Hulett is also the team’s leading rusher with 210 yards and one TD. … Hirschi is coming off a huge test in a 37-30 overtime victory against Brock. While the Eagles gave Hirschi a litmus test against quality Region II-4A Division II opponents, Springtown offers the Huskies a measuring stick against its district. Springtown defeated Graham, 35-13, last week.

IOWA PARK AT BURKBURNETT

When/where: 7 p.m. Friday, Bulldog Stadium

Last game: Iowa Park 63, Benbrook 21; Krum 21, Burkburnett 19.

Last meeting: Iowa Park 54, Burkburnett 7 (2021); Burkburnett leads all-time series 49-31-2.

Why it’s tasty: This is the 83rd meeting between the Wichita County rivals. The series dates to 1921, with Burkburnett winning the first 13 games. Iowa Park got its first win in 1948. The Hawks have won five of the last six, and mostly in decisive manner. Burkburnett’s lone win during that time was in 2018 on a last-second field goal. … This year’s matchup is expected to be the most competitive since the 2018 meeting. Burkburnett has been vastly improved, headlined by the prolific quarterback-receiver combination of Hunter McCall and Rylan Stringfellow. McCall leads the Wichita Falls area with 601 passing yards, completing 41 of 64 throws for seven TDs and an interception. Stringfellow tops the area with 20 receptions for 309 yards and four TDs. … Iowa Park established a run-heavy identity on offense last week against Benbrook, rushing for more than 500 yards. Why it’s tasty: This is the rare meeting of two winless state-ranked teams, with Muenster at No. 6 and Windthorst No. 7 in the Class 2A Division II DCTF poll. … Windthorst is coming off an open week, giving the Trojans extra time to prepare for their former district foe. But before a recent series of games, the Trojans and Hornets have not played very often in the history of the two programs. … The Hornets run the offense through a familiar name to the Trojans. Colton Deckard is back for his senior season as one of the best running backs in the state.

APPETIZERS

WFHS AT PLAINVIEW

When/where: 7 p.m. Friday, Greg Sherwood Memorial Stadium

Last game: WFHS 52, Hereford 28; Pampa 25, WFHS 21.

Last meeting: WFHS 56, Plainview 35 (2021); WFHS leads all-time series 8-2.

Why it’s tasty: This recent series continues after the Coyotes and Bulldogs spent four years together in the same district. The Coyotes won all four meetings by an average margin of 25.3 points. … Plainview’s main focus is to get the ball into the hands of senior Karomo Collins in space. Collins caught 15 passes for 190 yards and a TD against Pampa last week. He’s catching balls thrown by freshman Seth Mayberry, who is off to a strong start in his varsity career, completing 45 of 65 throws for 586 yards, five TDs and one interception. … The Coyotes got a stellar performance from senior quarterback John Ledesma last week. Ledesma threw for 477 yards and five TDs. He completed his first eight passes and had 350 yards and five TDs in the first half.

MAY AT KNOX CITY

When/where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Greyhound Field

Records: May 2-0; Knox City 2-0.

Last game: Knox City 60, Motley County 12; May 77, Austin St. Stephens 46.

Last meeting: May 65, Knox City 16 (2021); May leads all-time series 4-0.

Why it’s tasty: Knox City has already beaten Motley County and Strawn, the two teams who played for the Class A Division II state title last season. So, it’s fitting the Greyhounds challenge the Class A Division I state runnerup. … State runnerup is a title May is too familiar with. The Tigers have been in the last two state title games, including a 72-66 loss to Westbrook last season. May has been state runnerup four times in the past nine seasons.
