Area news in brief for April 10

SALEM CELEBRATION – Salem Preservation will celebrate National Preservation Month with an event May 6 in Carrollton. Events will include visits to Ashton’s 5 & 10 store and Ashton House Museum. At 3 p.m. a gathering on the village’s square will offer tours of McCook House Memorial Civil War Museum. The final stop is a visit at 4 p.m. to the Grand Tea Room in the Van Horne Building at 24 W. Main St. Meal, which features chicken or vegetarian entrée with salad, hot vegetable, bread, cake and drink, costs $21.95 plus 20% gratuity. Museum visits are $3 apiece. Organizers will be planning carpools, or those taking part can drive themselves at noon, leaving from The Smucker House at 271 S. Broadway in Salem, just a few doors south of Salem City Hall. Reservations can be made at 330-337-6829. Leave a message with name, number attending Grand Tea Room and a phone number. When making your reservation, alert organizers if you would be willing to have another member of the group ride along in your vehicle. They say they will try to accommodate non-drivers.

SALEM HISTORICAL – Salem Historical Society will play host to Carol Novosel, a folk artist who will present the program “My Ukrainian Immigration Story and Fold Art,” at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Shaffer Library, 239 S. Lundy Ave. in Salem. Attendees will learn the immigration story from Western Ukraine to Western Pennsylvania from the early 1900s until today. SEBRING COUNCIL – Sebring Village Council plans a workshop at 6 p.m. Monday to review applicants for a council seat. Council will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, and discussions will include a renewal 0.5-mill levy for parks and recreation; a 4.5-mill levy for the Fire Department; and a 2-mill levy for the Police Department.
