Area news in brief for May 4

PORK DINNER – First United Presbyterian Church, 265 W. Beech St. in Alliance, plans a pork dinner from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Meals are $10 apiece, and are available for dine in or carryout.

SALEM HISTORICAL – Salem Historical Society will present a program on baseball from a Kent State University at Stark professor at 7 p.m. May 9 at Shaffer Library, 239 S. Lundy Ave. Nonmembers of the society are welcome. Following a short business meeting, Leslie Heaphy, associate chair and associate professor of history at KSU Stark, will present "Women in the Game.” The lecture will focus on understanding the role that women have played in the game historically and in the present. SALEM MUSEUM – Salem Historical Society Museum will open for the 51st season on Sunday. It will be open every Sunday through Oct. 29 from 1 to 4 p.m., with the last tour beginning at 3:30. Guided tours of all the exhibits are available during these times. Members are admitted free. Admission for adults 18 and older is $6. Children ages 5-17 enter for $3. Children under 5 are admitted free. Visitors are asked to wear a mask. Entrance and parking for museum tours is at 208 S. LABYRINTH DAY – Trinity Episcopal Church in Alliance will participate in the 15th annual World Labyrinth Day at 1 p.m. Saturday, hosting a prayer walk on the church’s outdoor labyrinth. Participants from around the world will “Walk as One at 1” as a “moving meditation for world peace,” using either existing or temporarily built labyrinths. The community is welcome to gather at 12:45 p.m. for the Trinity event at the church, 1200 S. Union Ave. The event will last about 30 minutes and will move inside in case of rain. RODMAN MYSTERY – Teens ages 12-18 are invited to a Corporate Chaos murder mystery party from 3 to 5 p.m. May 11, at Rodman Public Library, where they will follow clues to figure out what happened to Eric Wilde, the CEO of Worldwide Prestige. Teens will play the part of one of those employees during the murder mystery program, which will feature snacks in between acts. MINERVA JAZZ – The 12th annual Brick Street Art & Jazz Festival will run 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. May 13 on Minerva’s historic North Market Street, featuring a wide range of musical styles, as well as interactive arts activities for all ages, food and fine crafts. Debuting is the Minerva Community Jazz Band, a professional big band jazz band led by Minerva High School band director Derrick Maxey. It will perform at 12:15 p.m. Other professional bands will include The John Reese Trio at 3 p.m.; The Jazz Society Big Band at 4:15 p.m.; and the Alliance Symphony Orchestra Big Band, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Live music will begin before the festival officially opens, with saxophonist Denny Ott playing during setup. High School and Middle School jazz bands performing during the day include the Hartford Middle School Jazz Band at 10 a.m.; the Carrollton High School Jazz Band at 10:45 a.m.; the Minerva High School Jazz Band at 11:30 a.m.; the Northwest High School Jazz Band at 1 p.m.; and the Beaver Local Jazz Band at 2:15 p.m. The festival will offer a wide variety of interactive art activities for all ages. Hands-on projects will be provided by Minerva Public Library, SPARK, and the Kids’ Art Area, sponsored by Minerva Area Federal Credit Union. HABITAT RESTORE EXPANSION – Alliance Area Habitat for Humanity will celebrate the Burnell-Brotsman expansion at the Habitat for Humanity Restore and Judith Tolerton Resource Center at 5 p.m. May 10 at the facility, 1006 S. Arch Ave.

ALLIANCE PRESERVATION – City of Alliance Historic Preservation Commission will meet at 3 p.m. May 4 at the City Administration Building, 504 E. Main St., in the second-floor conference room.
