Area news in brief for Nov. 1

SOUP SUPPER – Washington Township Historical Society plans its 10th annual Soup Supper from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at Alliance Salem United Methodist Church, 14113 Salem Church St. NE in the township. Donations will be accepted, and soups will be chicken noodle, ham and bean, vegetable beef and chili. Dinner also will include corn bread or bread, fruit cup and beverage. Raffle baskets will be available for bid, and tickets will be sold at the door. Proceeds benefit veterans’ projects and Historical Society projects such as the Veterans Memorial, flags for veterans in the township cemeteries and Flag Retirement Ceremony. The club meets at 7 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of each month except December, January and February at Washington Township Administration Building, 5789 Beechwood Ave. Next meeting is 7 p.m. Nov. 22, and will feature Paul Hobe discussing the life of Polly Amelia Sutton from North Benton during the Civil War. Refreshments are provided. Membership is $10 per year, and family memberships are $20 per year.

HOLIDAY TREE – Mike McAndrew from Canfield Christmas Lights, LLC, will demonstrate how to build a "mini tree" using common household items – tomato cage and strings of lights. He will also go over how to control lights with motion. This demonstration program will be 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Quaker Room of Sebring Public Library. A Q&A session will follow the live demonstration. Program is free and open to the public, but registration is required at www.salempubliclibrary.org or 330-332-0042. Salem Public Library is at 821 E. State St.

RODMAN TRUSTEES – Rodman Public Library’s Board of Trustees will meet at 4 p.m. Nov. 9. Note date change: Meeting originally was scheduled for Nov. 16.

SQUARE DANCINGThe Friendly Squares plan a dance from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Nov. 12 at the Niles SCOPE Center, 14 E. State St. in Niles. Gene Hammond will be caller, and Frankie Hammond will cue line dances. Theme is veterans. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual. There is a $6 donation per person at the door. STARK SMHA – Stark Metropolitan Housing Authority's Board of Directors plans a special meeting at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the agency's central office, 400 Tuscarawas St. E in Canton. Purpose of the meeting is for the board to enter into executive session to discuss the employment, discipline or dismissal of a public employee.
