Area news in brief for Nov. 6

ALLIANCE VETERANS DAY – The City of Alliance’s Veterans Day ceremony will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Freedom Square in downtown Alliance. This year’s speaker is Brad Pietzcker, who served in the U.S. Army for 36 years, retiring in May 2020 as a first sergeant. Pietzcker served two tours in the Middle East (Iraq and Kuwait); Operation Inherent Resolve; Operation Enduring Freedom; and Operation Spartan Shield. He deployed in 2015-16 and 2019-20. Pietzcker is a lifelong resident of Stark County, and currently serves on the Outreach Team with the Veterans Service Commission of Stark County as an outreach associate and public speaker. In the event of inclement weather, the service will move indoor to the Firehouse Theater on East Market Street, next to the courthouse.

MINERVA STEM – Minerva High School’s STEM Makerspace will be open to the community from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. A workshop on the basics of laser engraving will run 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., and open work time will run 10 a.m. to noon. While the space is open at no cost if you bring your own materials, fees will be required for use of in-house materials. The makerspace currently offers an Omtech Laser Engraver, which can engrave anything but metal. Available materials include such items as leather, acrylic, wood, coasters and keychains. Prusa and Ender 3 3D printers are available and visitors can create a custom design or find one online to print. Visitors can use or learn to use drones, with materials available for constructing a course to fly. The makerspace also offers many types of radio-controlled planes to practice and learn on. SOUP SALE – Mile Branch Grange plans its monthly drive-thru soup sale from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at 495 Knox School Road in Knox Township. Cost is $8 per quart. This month’s soups will be broccoli cheese and vegetable beef. Soup must be preordered by noon Wednesday. Soup will be packaged and delivered directly to your car ready to heat when you get home. Call 330-821-8023 to reserve soup. Leave your name, phone number, type of soup and number of quarts and your soup will be waiting for you.

MARLINGTON MEETING – Marlington Local School District’s Board of Education plans a board work session at 5 p.m. Monday in the Marlington High School Digital Learning Zone at 10450 Moulin Ave. in Lexington Township. The following topics are expected to be discussed – summer projects and finances, including the five-year forecast. No board action is anticipated. Pending any technological issues, the meeting will be live-streamed on the Marlington Local Schools Technology Department’s YouTube channel.

ALLIANCE ZONING – City of Alliance Board of Zoning Appeals will meet at 4:45 p.m. Nov. 21 in the second floor conference room of the City Administration Building, 504 E. Main St. in Alliance. Among the items to be discussed is Aultman Alliance Community Hospital’s variance request for a drive-through in a B-4 zoning area. The request is for 1401 S. Arch Ave.

SEBRING HYDRANTS – Flushing of hydrants in Sebring Village will begin Nov. 13. Flushing will begin at the Sebring Water Treatment Plant on Knox School Road and will continue north throughout the village until all hydrants are flushed. Flushing will also affect Maple Ridge and Beloit water customers. Customers might experience fluctuations in pressure and discoloration of their water during flushing. During periods of discoloration, postpone washing clothes and limit your use of hot water until the cold water clears. Discoloration typically clears within 24 hours.
