The Safety Council of Southwestern Ohio and Butler County Safe Communities will launch the 2023 campaign Thursday morning at Talawanda High School in Oxford at 10 a.m., according to a Safety Council spokesperson.

“In 2022, we lost 14 community members in Butler County because they did not buckle their seat belts,” said Aubrey Woods of the Safety Council of Southwestern Ohio.

The Safety Council said about 50% of all crashes involve motorists who don’t wear their seatbelt and that number increases to 65% when it comes to deadly crashes.

Talawanda High School had the highest percentage of buckled drivers during the “Battle of the Belts” seat belt challenge this spring. They will be presented with a banner and law enforcement will speak on the importance of seatbelts.

The national seatbelt campaign will take place from May 22 through June 4, concurrent with the busy travel season.
