Area Roundup: AAE girls soccer takes title at Jerry Lyle Pettis Memorial Cup

The Academy for Academic Excellence girls soccer team is off to a blazing start this season.

The Knights are unbeaten through seven games and picked up four victories this week to take first place at the Jerry Lyle Pettis Memorial tournament, hosted by Loma Linda Academy.

AAE won the tourney’s title with a 2-0 victory over Big Bear in a preview of what could be the top two teams battling for the Cross Valley League title later this season.

Brooke Ebright earned the MVP and Golden Boot awards after tallying 12 goals and seven assists over the four games.

Ebright nearly accounted for half of AAE’s 27 total goals scored. The Knights began the tournament with a 9-1 victory over Twentynine Palms, then beat Loma Linda 6-1 and Desert Christian 10-0 in the semifinals.

Bella Moreno came up big for the Knights in goal. The goalkeeper recorded two shutouts and 12 total saves to claim the Golden Glove award.

The Knights also got four goals and four assists from Abbey Gremer, three goals from Caitlyn Carlson and two goals apiece from Caprice Caasi, Emily Garcia and Anahi Duron.

AAE (7-0) is back in action at home against the Palmdale Aerospace Academy on Dec. 6.

PREP BOYS BASKETBALL

Excelsior 47, Entrepreneur 38

At Victorville, Carter Oerman snagged 35 rebounds and scored 15 points to lead the Eagles to their first victory of the season Nov. 29.

Robert Moreo followed right behind with 13 points, six assists and two rebounds, and  Kaleb Ramos added eight points and seven rebounds.

Excelsior (1-4) is back in action against CIMS on Dec. 6 to begin Cross Valley League action.

Oak Hills 58, Santa Fe 32

At Ontario, Mansour Sanneh recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Bulldogs at the Toyota Arena prior to the Ontario Clippers’ game on Nov. 30.

Isaiah Sharky added 14 points and eight rebounds, and Jeremiah Lark filled the stat sheet with  10 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks.

United Christian Academy 50, Hesperia Christian 46

At La Verne, Jared Bragg scored 22 points and snagged 10 rebounds but the Patriots lost by four points in tournament action on Dec. 1.

Cody New chipped in 16 points and nine rebounds.

Earlier in the tourney, New dropped 23 points with 17 rebounds and Arlan Koester added 11 points and 11 rebounds in a 50-47 victory over St. Monica Academy.

New also led the team in a 58-29 victory over Crossroads Christian by scoring 18 points. Bragg followed right behind with 17 points and Kyle Day tallied 10 rebounds.

PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL

Apple Valley 46, Granite Hills 23

Simran Ahluwalia scored 18 points to go along with five steals to lead the Sun Devils past the Cougars on Nov. 29.

Hesperia Christian 39, Western Christian 27

At La Verne, Kailey New recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Patriots on Nov. 28.

Hannah Audet added eight points, and Kaylene Brand snagged seven rebounds.

PREP BOYS SOCCER

Oak Hills 2, Silverado 1

The Bulldogs kicked off the season with a victory over the Hawks on Nov. 29.

Jaiden Espinoza and Ryan Callaway both scored goals, on assists from D’Angelo Martinez and Raul Becerra.

Granite Hills 4, Apple Valley 2

At Apple Valley, Zaine Rocca scored two goals to lead the Cougars past the Sun Devils in the season opener on Nov. 29.

Cesar Sainz also scored a goal and assisted on two; Ray Rocca scored a goal; Thane Harding and Erik Aispuro each had an assist; and Aden Gallegos ended with three saves in goal.

Sultana 3, Granite Hills 2

At Hesperia, Jesus Mendoza scored two goals in the second half to push the Sultans past the Cougars on Nov. 30.

Granite Hills took a 1-0 lead and Sultana tied it up before halftime on a goal from Josue Cesena, assisted by Giovanni Vitela.

The Sultans scored two goals to take a 3-1 lead, and Granite Hills scored its final goal with about eight minutes left.

Mendoza scored his goals on assists from Nate Guzman and David Hernandez, both freshmen.

For Granite Hills, Zaine Rocca and Cesar Sainz each scored a goal with an assist and Aden five saves

Oak Hills 4, Pacific 0

The Bulldogs improved to 2-0 on the season and got goals from four different players on Friday afternoon.

Jaiden Espinoza, Ruben Rodriguez, Raul Becerra and D’Angelo Martinez each scored for Oak Hills. Martinez, Simon Guzman, Edgar Alvarez and Alex Rodriguez each had an assists.

PREP GIRLS SOCCER

Apple Valley 6, Granite Hills 0

At Apple Valley, Alia Collins scored two goals and assisted on another in the Sun Devils’ season opener on Nov. 29.

Maddyx Hasty chipped in two assists and also scored a goal; Savannah James, Samantha Most and Abigail Riley each scored a goal;  Bonneau, Payten McClain and Melissa Blakely each had an assist; and Maya Blodgett recorded 11 saves in the shutout.

Serrano 1, Adelanto 0

At Adelanto, Gisselle Martinez scored on an assist from Mariah Kavanaugh to lift the Diamondbacks to their first victory of the season Wednesday night.

Ryann Munoz, last season’s Mojave River League’s Defensive Player of the Year, recorded three saves in the shutout.

Munoz also made eight saves in the season opener against Barstow. Serrano and the Aztecs played to a 1-1 draw. Jaylen Diaz scored on an assist from Martinez.

Serrano (1-0-1) is back in action at Granite Hills on Tuesday.
