Mar. 31—Boys soccer

Pella 6, Winterset 0

WINTERSET — It was a very strong first showing for the Dutch as they rolled to 6-0 win over Winterset to kick off their 2023 campaign on Thursday.

Senior forward/midfielder Logan Solomon got the Dutch going with four goals helping Pella build a 4-0 lead after the first half. This allowed them to try different lineups and formations in the second half as Isaac Kalkwarf also found the back of the net and a Winterset own goal contributed to the 6-0 final score.

Teddy Apostolopoulos tallied two assists in the game while Austin Bone also had one helper. Goalkeeper time was split between Isaac Boualavong and Tristan Huckstep with the two combining for the three-save shutout.

Pella (1-0) returns home to face Norwalk (0-2) on Tuesday at 7:45 p.m.

Ottumwa 4, Oskaloosa 0

OTTUMWA — The Indians opened up their season on the road at Ottumwa on Thursday and would suffer a shutout loss.

The Bulldogs have been a tough matchup for Oskaloosa over the years with Thursday's loss dropping their record to 0-11 in the series since 2011 with four of those losses coming by one goal.

Osky trailed 1-0 at the half before Ottumwa opened it up with three more goals in the second half. Junior Jose Pineda Fernandez tallied two goals and one assist for the Bulldogs while Osky keeper Omar Garcia tallied 12 saves on the night.

MONROE — The Eagles scored a tight season-opening win on the road on Thursday.

The two teams were locked at 0-0 at the half before PC broke the tie eight minutes into the second half with Aiden Stoltz finding Trevan Parker in front of the net for their first goal. Stoltz would create another great opportunity a few minutes later with a lofted cross to Ethan Van Arendonk who knocked it in with a header to make it 2-0. That score would hold with PC keeper Kaleb Pogany only needing two saves to secure his shutout.

Pella Christian (1-0) travels to Newton (1-1) on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
