Brady Fonville shot a 36 at Bear Valley Country Club on Thursday afternoon to lead the Apple Valley golf team to a 198-200 victory over Hesperia.

Apple Valley head coach Andrew Robbins especially credits Fonville, a sophomore, for pulling off the two-stroke victory especially after what could have been a disaster on the seventh hole.

Fonville’s drive went into the water on the par-5 seventh hole. Fonville dropped a ball then nailed a perfect approach onto the green over 200 yards away then sank a 12-foot putt for the birdie.

“His birdie after going in the water was one of the best holes I’ve ever witnessed in person,” Robbins said. “Obviously any stroke could have been the difference in the match but that was huge.”

Fonville also birdied the ninth hole, helping him finish with the final score of 36.

Matching Fonville's play was Hesperia’s Sullivan Kilkenny, who also finished with a 36. Kilkenny has continuously finished among the top scores for Hesperia, and that was his best finish of the season.

Teammate Luke Hallett finished right behind at 38. But a trio of Sun Devils — Dylan Kemple, Cory Rose and Brody Earnest — each shot a 37.

“Those coaches do a great job of preparing their players for competition,” Hesperia head coach Jeremy Topete said. “Their kids work tirelessly in order to improve their game. It is a pleasure to compete with them. It challenges our players to focus. It's great for golf and great for the High Desert. Competition breeds success.”
