Area Roundup: Granite Hills girls soccer looks to end the season unbeaten in DSL action

The Granite Hills girls soccer team’s dominance has been on full display this season and Friday night was no different.

The same could be said for Samantha Grantham. The senior scored two goals to lead the Cougars to a 3-1 victory over Adelanto on the road Friday night. Julia Alvarado scored a goal and Victoria Villegas, and Makenzie Bohn each had an assist. Goalkeeper Analiese Castel tallied six saves.

Grantham scored her 26th and 27th goal of the season. She’s also up to 15 goals in DSL action.

She’s been the catalyst for Granite Hills, which clinched the outright league title with a 12-0 victory over Silverado earlier this week. Grantham, along with two other teammates scored two goals in that victory.

That’s Granite Hills’ fifth straight league title, and Friday’s victory was the 31st straight DSL game, dating back to the start of the 2019-20 season.

The Cougars (10-6-1, 7-0 DSL) wrap up the season Monday at Victor Valley.

Hesperia Christian 52, CIMS 40

At Hesperia, Jared Bragg scored 23 points with 10 rebounds to lead the Patriots past the Cougars on Friday.

Arlan Koester snagged 23 rebounds and scored 13 points, and Kyle Day seven points and eight rebounds.

Hesperia 47, Burroughs 46

At Hesperia, the Scorpions clinched at least a share of the Mojave River League title in a nail-biter Thursday night.

Hesperia trailed by two at the half, and the teams were tied 28-28 entering the fourth quarter.

Queen Allah led the Scorpions with 18 points, Dhymond Zambrana added 12 points and Danea Clemons chipped in 10 points.

Hesperia, which has not won a league title since 2008, can claim the outright title with one victory over the final two, or a loss from Burroughs.

The Scorpions (16-7, 8-0 MRL) travel to Apple Valley on Tuesday.

Day named CIF-SS 8-man MVP

Hesperia Christian’s Kyle Day was recently named the Most Valuable Player when the All-CIF-Southern Section 8-man Division 2 team was announced.

Day helped lead the team to the Div. 2 title and over the season racked up 101 total tackles. He made 29 solo tackles, and three for a loss, along with an interception and caused four fumbles.

His teammates Jared Bragg, Ayden Ortega and Arlan Koester received a nod to the Div. 2 First Team on offense, while Caleb Lewis was named to the Second Team.

Justin Contreras, UCSA, also earned a spot on the Second Team.

Granite Hills 0, Adelanto 0

At Apple Valley, the Saints inched a step closer to clinching the Desert Sky League title with a draw with the Cougars on Friday.

Adelanto has two games left to play and has a 5-0-1 record, while Granite Hills is at 4-1-2 with one game left on the slate.

The Saints just need to win one of the next two games to clinch the title. It would be the program’s first DSL title since 2017.

Granite Hills wraps up its season Monday at home against Victor Valley, while Adelanto heads to Silverado.

Serrano 3, Apple Valley 1

At Apple Valley, the Diamondbacks jumped into second place in the Mojave River League standings with a victory over the Sun Devils on Thursday.

Nate Munoz scored twice and also assisted on Anthony Potter’s goal in the victory. Potter also had an assist. Brandon Quezada tallied four saves in goal.

Serrano (9-8-4, 5-2-1 MRL) hosts Sultana on Tuesday in a high-stakes matchup.

Sultana 2, Oak Hills 1

At Hesperia, J Mendoza-Rubio scored a late penalty kick to lift the Sultans past the Bulldogs on Thursday night.

Josue Cesena scored on an assist from Nathaniel Guzman to put Sultana on the board and even the score.

The Sultans are currently in fourth place in the league standings with a 3-1-4 record. Sultana travels to Serrano on Tuesday before ending the season at Hesperia.

Oak Hills is currently third place with a 4-2-2 record and heads to Burroughs on Tuesday, and ends the season at home against Serrano.

Hesperia 5, Burroughs 0

At Ridgecrest, the Scorpions got back in the win column with a shutout against the Burros on Thursday.

Jorge Negrete and Chris Palacios each scored a goal and had an assist; Nate Sanchez, Alan Lopez and Jared Miranda each scored a goal; and Jacob Loza tallied three assists.

Hesperia (12-8-3, 6-1-1 MRL) hosts Apple Valley on Tuesday and ends the season on the road against Sultana.

PREP GIRLS SOCCER

Oak Hills 3, Sultana 0

At Oak Hills, the Bulldogs improved to 5-1 in Mojave River League action with a victory over the Sultans on Thursday afternoon.

Caimbria Lawson-Kitchen, Sasha Therrien Dominguez and Sydney Middaugh each scored a goal; Mikaela Maldanado and Liliana Arreola had an assist a piece; and goalkeeper Kendall Ness tallied three saves to record the shutout.

Apple Valley 1, Serrano

At Phelan, the Sun Devils got back in the win column and escaped with a one-goal victory over the Diamondbacks on Thursday.

The Sun Devils scored the game’s lone goal in the second half. Serrano goalkeeper Ryann Munoz tallied six saves.

Serrano (7-8-2, 4-2-1 Mojave River League) heads to Oak Hills on Monday afternoon.

Serrano 5, Hesperia 2

At Hesperia, Madison Baker and Gisselle Martinez each scored two goals to help lead the Diamondbacks past the Scorpions on Jan. 24.

Jasmine Cordero picked up three assists for Serrano; Mariah Kavanaugh scored a goal with an assist; and Kaylee Davis also had an assist.
