Area Roundup: Granite Hills sweeps singles and doubles titles at the DSL Finals

It was a clean sweep for the Granite Hills boys tennis team at the Desert Sky League Finals on Thursday afternoon.

Eric Poindexter breezed to the boys tennis singles title, and Chris Grantham and Jace Esplin pulled off the victory for the doubles crown.

Poindexter beat Silverado’s Richard Dodd 6-1, 6-0 in the championship match. Poindexter advanced to the finals by beating Dodd’s teammate Darren Gandy 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinals.

Dodd topped Adelanto’s Joshua Yanes 6-1, 6-2.

Gandy beat Yanes 6-3 for third place.

In doubles action, Grantham and Esplin beat Barstow’s Gabriel Melton and Darrien Tyler 7-5, 6-2 for the crown.

Grantham and Esplin won 6-1, 6-4 in the semifinals, and Tyler and Melton beat Granite Hills Angel Garcia and Anthony Castillo (4-6, 7-6(9), 10-6).

Garcia and Castillo took third place with a 6-2 victory.

PREP BASEBALL

Victor Valley 11, Adelanto 10

At Victorville, the Jackrabbits scored eight runs in the first inning and just held on to beat the Saints and end the season unbeaten in Desert Sky League play.

Aaron Olivares picked up the victory and Gabriel Munoz notched the save.

Olivares ended with two hits, including a double, and Mikey Jimenez and Carlos Mendoza both hit doubles.

The DSL champions await Monday morning’s release of the CIF-Southern Section playoff pairings.

At Yermo, the Trojans wrapped up the season with a victory over the Mustangs on Thursday afternoon.

Brel Fields helped lead the offense by going 2 for 3 with three RBI and a run; Lawson Talarico went 1 for 3 with four RBI; and Jaden Sassone went 2 for 4 with two RBI and three runs.

PREP SOFTBALL

University Prep 29, Riverside Prep 3

At Victorville, Dani Jackman drove in nine runs in the season finale Thursday as the Jaguars routed the Silver Knights.

Jackman went 5 for 5 with a home runs and also scored four runs. Jackman ends the regular season with a state-leading 19 home runs and 76 RBI, according to MaxPreps.com.

University Prep celebrated the team’s seniors, including Bibi Rodriguez and Victoria Mendez.

Rodriguez went 5 for 5 with a home run, four runs and five RBI. Mendez ended 4 for 5 with a home run, four runs and two runs.

The Jaguars (18-5, 9-1 Cross Valley League) await the release of the CIF-Southern Section playoff pairings this weekend.

Barstow 11, Silverado 4

At Victorville, the Aztecs exploded for nine runs in the top of the sixth inning and topped the Hawks to force a three-way tie atop the Desert Sky League standings.

Lauren Franco led the offense by going 3 for 4 with two RBI and two runs; Mariah Rodriguez went 4 for 5 with two RBI and two runs; Riley Purdy went 2 for 5 with two RBI and two runs; and Charley Peralta and Marley Zamora each tallied a hit and two RBI.

Despite the victory, Barstow enters the CIF-Southern Section as the league’s No. 3 seed after a runs-scored tiebreaker determined the seeding.

Silverado and Victor Valley, which both ended with identical 9-3 DSL records, are the No. 1 and 2 seeds, respectively.

At Adelanto, the Jackrabbits racked up 10 runs in the first inning and beat the Saints in the season finale Thursday.

Jocelyn Webster led the offense for Victor Valley by going 3 for 4 with three RBI and three runs; Alaysia Ross and Alany Esparza both went 3 for 4 with three RBI and two runs; and Jordyn Madrigal went 4 for 5 with two RBI and three runs.

After ending the season in a three-way tie at 9-3 in Desert Sky League action, the Jackrabbits are the league’s No. 2 seed entering the CIF-Southern Section playoffs.

Silverado and Barstow, which both ended with identical 9-3 DSL records, are the No. 1 and 3 seeds, respectively.

PREP TRACK & FIELD

Barstow’s Angelina Vasquez and Granite Hills’ Hunter Roy both won four individual events at the Desert Sky League Finals on Thursday afternoon.

Vasquez took first in the 400 (1:00.55), 800 (2:32.62), 1600 (5:18.17) and 3200 (11:58.36). But she wasn’t the only girl to win all four events.

Silverado’s SauZhane Johnson also accomplished the feat. She took first in the 100 hurdles (17.77), long jump (15-8.5) and ran legs on both winning relay teams.

In boys action, Roy took first in the 800 (2:04.46), 3200 (10:44.73), high jump (5-8) and long jump (20-0).

Adelanto’s Keith Reynolds won both dash races, and Silverado’s Isaiah Cosby took first in both hurdles events.
